CHAPTER 4 — THE SNIPER PULLED THE TRIGGER... BUT THE WOMAN HE WAS PAID TO KILL SPOKE FIVE WORDS THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The second shot never came.
The sniper had Elena centered in his scope.
One slow breath.
One finger tightening against the trigger.
Then—
Damián moved.
Without thinking.
Without hesitation.
He threw himself in front of Elena.
BANG!
The bullet ripped through the sleeve of his overcoat, grazing his upper arm before smashing into a marble angel behind them.
Stone exploded into the air.
People screamed.
The cemetery erupted into chaos.
"Protect Mr. Cruz!"
Security agents rushed forward, forming a human shield around Damián and Elena while others sprinted toward the hill where the sniper had fired.
The assassin disappeared into the darkness.
He had planned his escape well.
Within seconds he vanished among the old mausoleums.
Only silence remained.
Blood slowly ran down Damián's arm.
"It barely touched you!" Elena cried.
"I'm fine."
"You've been shot!"
"I've survived worse."
He looked at her instead of his wound.
"Are you hurt?"
She shook her head.
For a brief moment, neither of them noticed the dozens of cameras now surrounding the cemetery.
News reporters had arrived.
Someone had tipped them off.
Flashes exploded everywhere.
"Cameras down," Damián ordered.
His security team immediately blocked every lens.
No photographs.
No interviews.
No headlines.
Not tonight.
Meanwhile...
Two miles away...
Vanessa Luján watched the live television coverage from the back seat of her car.
Her hands trembled.
"How did he miss?"
She slammed her phone onto the leather seat.
"He never misses."
A nervous voice answered through the speaker.
"There were too many people."
"I didn't pay him to hit the billionaire!"
"You said eliminate the maid."
"I don't care who dies!"
Silence.
Then the caller whispered,
"There's another problem."
"What now?"
"The police recovered the payment receipt."
Vanessa's face turned white.
"You told me you destroyed everything."
"I thought I had."
She ended the call.
For the first time that night...
Fear replaced anger.
Back at the cemetery...
The steel box remained open.
No one dared touch its contents.
Damián slowly picked up the sealed envelope marked:
OPEN ONLY IF THEY RETURN.
He looked at Elena.
"This belongs to you."
She nodded.
Her fingers trembled so badly she could barely break the wax seal.
Inside...
Only three sheets of paper.
The first was handwritten.
The second was a birth certificate.
The third...
A faded family photograph.
Elena unfolded the letter.
The handwriting belonged to Ruth.
She recognized it instantly.
She began reading aloud.
"If this letter has been opened... then the people I feared have finally returned.
My name is Ruth Robles.
That is not the name I was born with.
Thirty-three years ago, my younger sister Isabel and I worked as nurses at Santa Esperanza Hospital.
One stormy night, two baby boys were born only minutes apart.
One belonged to a poor young widow.
The other belonged to the wife of one of the richest men in Mexico.
Before sunrise... one of those babies disappeared."
Everyone stood frozen.
Even the police officers stopped writing.
Elena continued.
Her voice broke.
"The wealthy family had lost their son.
The poor mother had given birth to a healthy child.
A powerful man refused to accept losing his heir.
Money changed hands.
Doctors were threatened.
Birth records were altered.
And one innocent baby was placed into another woman's arms."
Damián's breathing became uneven.
His entire childhood flashed before his eyes.
The cold mansion.
The distant father.
The servants who raised him.
The feeling...
That he had never truly belonged.
Elena slowly unfolded the birth certificate.
The cemetery caretaker gasped.
The document listed two names.
Mother: Isabel Cruz
Child: Male
Below it...
A tiny footprint made with blue hospital ink.
Damián stared at the name.
"Isabel..."
His voice cracked.
"My mother's name."
Elena looked up.
Then she turned the page over.
On the back...
One sentence had been written in Ruth's handwriting.
"The baby who disappeared grew up believing his name was Damián Cruz."
The world seemed to stop.
One of the detectives whispered,
"My God..."
Another crossed himself.
Damián stood perfectly still.
He didn't blink.
He didn't breathe.
Then he quietly asked,
"...If I was stolen..."
He couldn't finish.
Elena slowly looked at the last photograph.
It showed two young nurses smiling beside identical newborn cribs.
One crib carried the name:
Damián Cruz.
The other carried another handwritten card.
One that had been partially burned.
Only the first name remained visible.
Gabriel...
The surname had been destroyed.
Before anyone could speak...
The elderly cemetery caretaker suddenly grabbed his chest.
His face twisted in pain.
He collapsed onto the wet grass.
"Call an ambulance!" someone shouted.
Elena rushed to his side.
The old man clutched her wrist with surprising strength.
His lips trembled.
"I... lied..."
"What?"
"There wasn't... only one baby..."
Everyone leaned closer.
The caretaker struggled for breath.
"There were..."
He coughed violently.
"...twins."
Silence.
Absolute silence.
Damián felt the ground disappear beneath his feet.
"Twins?"
The old man nodded weakly.
"One... was taken..."
"...the other..."
His eyes widened with terror as he stared past everyone.
Toward the cemetery gates.
"No..."
"No..."
"He's here..."
Before anyone could turn—
A black luxury sedan crashed through the cemetery entrance.
Its engine roared.
The vehicle sped directly toward the open grave.
Toward Elena.
Toward the steel box.
Toward the only evidence left.
Behind the wheel...
A man wearing black gloves smiled coldly.
And on the passenger seat beside him...
Rested a folder stamped with the logo of Cruz-Luján Construction.
Inside that folder...
Was a DNA report proving that one powerful family had spent thirty-three years protecting the wrong heir...

...while the real heir had been living under a completely different name.
