CHAPTER 5 — THE CAR CRASHED INTO THE GRAVE... BUT THE DNA REPORT EXPOSED A LIE WORTH BILLIONS

The black sedan accelerated instead of stopping.

Its tires screamed across the rain-soaked cemetery road.

"Get Elena out of here!" Damián shouted.

Two security agents grabbed Elena and pulled her away from the open grave just as the sedan slammed into the marble border surrounding Ruth Robles' resting place.

CRASH!

Stone exploded in every direction.

The steel box flew through the air.

The folder on the passenger seat burst open, scattering dozens of papers across the wet grass.

The driver threw the car into reverse, trying to escape.

He never got the chance.

Damián's lead security vehicle rammed the sedan broadside.

BOOM!

The impact spun the luxury car into an old oak tree.

Airbags exploded.

Smoke poured from beneath the hood.

Within seconds, armed security officers surrounded the wreck.

"Don't move!"

The driver reached inside his jacket.

A dozen weapons were instantly aimed at his head.

"Hands where I can see them!"

Slowly, he raised them.

His name was Martín Salas.

Forty-six years old.

Former military sniper.

Now a professional fixer hired by powerful families who preferred problems to disappear quietly.

The police handcuffed him as paramedics dragged him from the wrecked vehicle.

But Damián ignored the arrest.

His eyes were fixed on the papers scattered across the cemetery.

One page fluttered against Ruth's headstone.

Elena picked it up.

Across the top, in bold black letters, were the words:

CONFIDENTIAL DNA ANALYSIS

Her hands began to shake.

Damián stepped beside her.

Neither of them spoke.

Together, they read the first page.

The report compared two DNA samples.

Sample A: Damián Cruz

Sample B: Alejandro Cruz

Probability of biological father...

0.00%.

Elena looked up in disbelief.

"What does that mean?"

Damián answered quietly.

"It means Alejandro Cruz..."

He swallowed.

"...wasn't my father."

The cemetery seemed to grow even quieter.

Every lie he had lived with for thirty-three years suddenly cracked.

The powerful businessman.

The heir.

The only son.

None of it was true.

Twenty feet away...

Detective Ricardo Salazar finished searching the sedan.

He called out,

"Mr. Cruz!"

Damián walked over.

"What did you find?"

The detective held up a burner phone.

"It received its last call twenty-two minutes ago."

"From who?"

"We're tracing it now."

Before another word could be spoken, Martín Salas laughed.

Even in handcuffs.

Even bleeding.

He laughed.

"You people are looking in the wrong direction."

The detective frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Martín looked directly at Damián.

"You think I was hired to kill the maid."

"You weren't?"

"No."

He smiled through bloody lips.

"I was hired to destroy the box."

Silence.

"If Elena died..."

He shrugged.

"...that would've just been a bonus."

Damián narrowed his eyes.

"Who hired you?"

Martín remained silent.

Then he glanced toward Vanessa's abandoned receipt lying on the ground.

"No."

He chuckled.

"She only paid the grave robbers."

Damián felt his stomach tighten.

"If not Vanessa..."

Martín's smile widened.

"The person who hired me..."

"...is someone you call family."

The words hit harder than any bullet.

Family?

Damián had almost none left.

His father had died five years earlier.

His mother had supposedly died decades before.

He had no brothers.

No sisters.

At least...

That's what he had always believed.

The ambulance doors slammed shut behind the elderly cemetery caretaker.

Elena climbed inside beside him.

His breathing had become weaker.

He reached into his coat with trembling fingers.

"There isn't much time."

He pulled out a tiny brass key unlike the first one.

This one carried different initials.

C-9

Elena frowned.

"Another key?"

The old man nodded.

"It opens..."

He struggled for breath.

"...the safety deposit box."

"Where?"

"National Heritage Bank..."

He coughed violently.

"Downtown."

"What's inside?"

Tears rolled down the old man's face.

"The truth Ruth couldn't bury."

His heart monitor suddenly began to scream.

Doctors rushed around him.

"He's crashing!"

"Clear!"

The ambulance doors slammed shut.

It sped away into the night.

Elena watched helplessly as the flashing lights disappeared.

Meanwhile...

Across the city...

Vanessa Luján stood inside her penthouse, nervously pouring herself another glass of wine.

Her hands wouldn't stop shaking.

The television showed live footage from outside the cemetery.

She muted it.

Then looked toward the grandfather clock in the corner.

11:47 p.m.

Her husband Caleb walked in.

"What happened?"

She tried to smile.

"Nothing."

He stared at her stained coat.

The mud.

The blood.

The trembling hands.

"What did you do?"

"I protected our family."

His expression darkened.

"Vanessa..."

"...what exactly did you do?"

Before she could answer...

The penthouse doorbell rang.

Three slow chimes.

No one visited at midnight.

Caleb opened the door.

No one stood outside.

Only a small black gift box rested on the floor.

Inside...

A single silver bracelet.

Identical to Elena's.

And beneath it...

A folded note.

Caleb opened it.

His face immediately lost all color.

Vanessa grabbed the paper.

There was only one sentence.

"You buried the wrong woman."

Her wine glass slipped from her fingers and shattered across the marble floor.

"No..."

She whispered.

"That's impossible."

Caleb looked at her.

"What does this mean?"

She couldn't answer.

Because only three people had ever known the truth about that bracelet.

One had died.

One had disappeared.

And the third...

Had supposedly been murdered thirty-three years earlier.

Yet someone had just proven they were still alive.

Back at Damián's estate...

Long after midnight...

He sat alone in his study.

The DNA report lay open on his desk.

Beside it rested the faded photograph of the two young nurses.

His phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

He answered.

No one spoke for several seconds.

Then an elderly woman's voice whispered,

"Damián..."

His blood froze.

"I've waited thirty-three years to hear your voice again."

He couldn't breathe.

"Who is this?"

Soft sobbing came through the receiver.

"My name..."

The woman whispered,

"...is Isabel."

Damián slowly stood.

"My mother died."

"No."

A long silence followed.

"They wanted you to believe that."

Tears filled his eyes.

"Where are you?"

The woman answered with one heartbreaking sentence.

"I've been hiding from your family... since the night they stole you from my arms."

The line went dead.

Damián stared at the silent phone.

He had finally found his mother.

Or so he believed.

What he didn't know...

Was that somewhere in an abandoned warehouse on the outskirts of the city...

The real Isabel sat tied to a chair, unconscious.

The woman who had just called him...

Was an impostor.

And she was working for the one person no one had suspected.

Someone whose name had never appeared in a single document...

May you like

But whose fingerprints were on every lie.

End of Chapter 5...
