Chapter 5 - Out of the Ashes

They hid in an abandoned warehouse owned by one of Marcus’s shell companies on the Brooklyn waterfront. It was drafty and cold, but safe for the moment.

Nathan wrapped his cashmere coat around Elizabeth, who was resting on a makeshift cot. Lily sat beside her, holding her mother’s hand tightly. She kept looking at Nathan, her forest-green eyes filled with a mixture of awe and fear.

"I'm sorry I ran from you," Lily whispered softly, looking down at her boots.

Nathan knelt in front of her, his hand gently reaching out to tuck a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. "You were protecting your mom, Lily. You are the bravest girl I have ever met. Just like her."

He looked up at Elizabeth. Her breathing was shallow, but her eyes were clear.

"The necklace," Elizabeth whispered, reaching up to touch the blue butterfly still resting on Lily’s neck. "Do you know why I gave it to her, Nathan? It wasn't just a keepsake. I knew Arthur was tracking my digital footprint. I couldn't use any tech. But I kept the original research files... the code to synthesize the cure."

Nathan frowned. "Where?"

Elizabeth pointed to the blue morpho pendant. "The stone. It's not a stone, Nathan. It's a high-density quantum micro-storage drive. I had a friend in Paris build it into the casing before we even got married, back when we were still paranoid about corporate espionage."

Nathan’s jaw dropped. The blue butterfly wasn't just a symbol of their love. It was the key to exposing Arthur, saving Elizabeth’s life, and curing millions.

"But we have to act fast," Marcus said, walking in with a laptop. "Arthur is panicking. He’s called an emergency board meeting for tomorrow morning at Reed Innovations HQ. He's announcing a hostile takeover, claiming you’ve suffered a mental breakdown and are unfit to run the company. If he gets control, he’ll lock down the patents permanently."
