Chapter 1 - The Bio-Surgical Conspiracy

"Dissociation?" Mayaâs voice cut through the air like a scalpel. She didn't flinch as the two armed guards took a synchronized step forward, their leather jackets rustling against concealed weapons. "He's seven years old, Dr. Langley. Seven. And this isn't cotton or feathersâitâs surgical-grade 316L stainless steel coated in a neuro-paralytic compound."
She reached down, her gloved fingers snatching the discarded trauma shears, and pointed the blunt tip directly at Langleyâs chest.
"I spent four years in trauma ICU at Johns Hopkins before taking this private contract," Maya continued, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. "I know a transdermal delivery matrix when I see one. You weren't treating his night terrors. You were dosing him. Every single night when he laid his head on this pillow, those needles pierced his skin, paralyzing his vocal cords so he couldn't scream while you extracted his marrow."
Langleyâs polished demeanor did not crack, but his silver-rimmed glasses reflected the harsh bulb above like two blank coins. "Nurse Bennett, you are exhausted. Overworked. Delusional." He raised a manicured hand, giving a subtle two-finger flick to the guards. "Secure the boy. Take Miss Bennett to the basement holding office until the authorities arrive to process her for medical malpractice and breach of contract."
"Don't touch him!" Maya roared.
Before the nearest guard could grab Ethan, Maya kicked the heavy brass bedside table with everything she had. The heavy oak stand crashed into the first guardâs shins, sending him stumbling backward. In that fractional second of chaos, Maya grabbed Ethan by his waist, yanked him into her arms, and smashed her elbow into the emergency fire-alarm lever near the door frame.
A deafening, ear-splitting siren blared through the mansion, accompanied by blinding strobe lights.
"Grab her!" Langley screamed, his calm facade shattering into ugly, raw fury. "Do not let her leave this wing with that boy!"
Maya didn't wait. Carrying Ethanâs light frame, she sprinted down the dimly lit corridor of the east wing. Bullet rounds whined through the air, splintering the priceless 18th-century mahogany wall paneling behind them. She ducked into a narrow servant passage concealed behind a velvet tapestryâa secret route she had discovered three nights prior while exploring the estate.
Huddled in the pitch-black crawlspace, listening to the muffled heavy boots pounding past outside, Maya felt Ethan trembling violently against her chest.
"Maya..." he sobbed softly, his tiny fingers digging into her scrubs. "The Sandman... he put the needles in my skin because I was bad?"
"No, baby," Maya whispered, tears stinging her eyes as she kissed the top of his head. "You are good. You are so good. And I am going to tear this house down before I let them touch you again."
She pulled out her penlight to check Ethanâs neck. But as the small beam illuminated the inner lining of the hidden passageway, her light caught something else: an old steel wall cabinet stamped with the logo of Caruso Biopharmaceuticals.
Maya pulled the rusty latch open. Inside lay a thick, leather-bound medical file labeled: PROJECT DAEDALUS â SUBJECT 04 (ETHAN CARUSO).
She flipped to the first page, and her blood ran cold.

Ethan wasn't Dante Caruso's biological son. He was a genetically engineered, cloned biological donorâcreated solely to harvest clean stem cells for Dante Caruso, who was dying of a rare autoimmune degradation.
And according to the timeline in the file, Ethanâs designated "harvest termination date" was scheduled for midnight tonight.
