Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass Ceiling

The sound of the silver tray clattering against the cold, pristine marble echoed through the grand ballroom like a gunshot. A dozen crystal champagne flutes shattered into a million glistening shards, spraying sparkling wine across the hem of the maid’s faded grey uniform.

Silence descended upon the room—a heavy, suffocating silence that sucked the air out of the three hundred high-society guests gathered under the cascading light of the baccarat chandeliers.

"Mommy..." the boy sobbed, his small fingers clutching tightly into the fabric of her worn apron. He hid his tear-stained face in the crook of her neck, trembling as if he had just escaped a monster.

Elena, the maid, trembled violently. She didn't care about the broken glass piercing her knees through her thin tights. She didn't care about the eyes of the city's elite burning into her back. For two agonizing years, eight months, and twelve days, she had been forced to clean the floors of the Vance Estate, prohibited from ever looking the young master in the eyes. Today, the protocol had broken. Her soul had broken.

"Get your filthy hands off my son!"

Victoria Vance, the woman in the hand-beaded white gown, stepped forward. Her pristine porcelain face was pale, contorted with a mixture of sheer panic and disgust. She reached down, grabbing the toddler’s tiny arm to wrench him away.

"Don't touch him!" Elena gasped, instinctively wrapping her body around the boy, shielding him with her own frame. "Please, Madam Victoria... he's terrified!"

"He is the sole heir to the Vance Empire!" Victoria hissed, her voice dropping into a dangerous, razor-sharp whisper as she leaned in close so the whispering crowd wouldn't hear every word. "He is my son. You signed the contract, Elena. You took the money for your mother's surgery and waived every single right you had. You were supposed to be transferred to the countryside estate last month!"

"I tried to leave," Elena wept, holding the boy tighter as he whimpered. "They wouldn't let me go... they kept me locked in the east wing quarters..."

"Victoria."

A cold, authoritative voice cut through the tension. Julian Vance, the ruthless CEO of Vance Global and Victoria’s husband, stepped out from the crowd. His dark suit was immaculate, his expression completely unreadable. He looked down at the maid kneeling in glass and champagne, then at the child clinging to her.

"What is the meaning of this?" Julian demanded, his eyes narrowing as he locked gaze with Elena. For a fraction of a second, something flared in his icy grey eyes—confusion, recognition, and a flicker of deep dark dread. "Why does Leo know her?"

"She... she's just a crazy servant, Julian!" Victoria stammered, her composure cracking. "She’s been stalking the nursery! Guards! Drag this woman out of here immediately!"

As two massive security guards lunged forward, the toddler turned his head and screamed, "No! Don't hurt Mommy! Daddy, don't let them hurt Mommy!"

The entire ballroom gasped. Julian froze mid-step.

"What did you just call me, Leo?" Julian asked, his voice deathly quiet.

"Not her!" the boy sobbed, pointing a tiny, trembling finger at Victoria in her white gown. "She bites me! She locks me in the dark room when you go away! Mommy Elena gives me bread! Mommy Elena sings to me!"
