Chapter 5 - The Shadow SyndicateThe metal door of Interrogation Room C clicked open behind me, breaking the suffocating silence.

Agent Vance stepped into the room, his phone held tight against his ear. His face was unusually pale, his usual confident demeanor replaced by an edge of sharp, immediate tension.
"Lena," Vance said, his voice urgent. "We need to move. Right now."
I stood up slowly, my mind still spinning from my father's horrifying confession. Victor looked up at Vance, his eyes wild with terror.
"You hear me?!" Victor screamed at the agent, pulling frantically against his handcuffs. "You can't leave her out there! They know she has the primary key! They will burn this entire city down to get that money back!"
"Shut up, Victor!" Vance barked. He grabbed my arm gently but firmly, pulling me out into the hallway as the heavy steel door slammed shut behind us, cutting off my father’s desperate screams.
"Is what he said true?" I asked, my voice shaking as we walked briskly down the sterile corridor toward the secure exit. "Was my mother involved with an organized crime syndicate?"
"We’ve been investigating Carter Harbor Logistics for two years, Lena," Vance admitted grimly as we rushed down a flight of concrete stairs. "We knew about the unauthorized cargo shipments moving through Port Newark. We knew someone high up in the company was allowing uninspected shipping containers into the state. But until tonight, we didn't know whether it was your father or your mother pulling the strings."
"My mother was trying to protect me," I whispered, the weight of the realization crashing down on me.
All those late nights at the kitchen island when I was younger... all those hours she spent teaching me how to analyze shell corporations, how to track hidden assets, how to use forensic tools—she wasn't just preparing me for a corporate career. She was training me to survive the trap she had been pulled into.
We burst through the rear exit of the police building into a secured underground parking garage. Two black SUV armored vehicles were idling near the ramp, their engines rumbling softly.
"We’re moving you to a secure safehouse in Northern Virginia," Vance said, guiding me toward the back door of the lead SUV. "Your brothers are already under federal protective custody in Miami. Once we verify the offshore ledger routes on your hard drive, the Department of Justice will place you into full Witness Protection."
"What about Marcus?" I asked, stopping near the door.
"He’s already being transported to a private military hospital under guard," Vance assured me. "He’s safe. Now get inside."
I stepped up onto the SUV's running board, but before I could slide into the leather seat, a strange, low sound echoed from the far side of the parking garage.
THUD. THUD.
It sounded like heavy objects hitting the concrete floor near the garage entrance.
Vance instantly unholstered his sidearm, stepping out from behind the SUV door. "Stay inside, Lena! Drive—!"
Before he could finish his sentence, the two federal agents stationed at the garage security gate suddenly collapsed to the floor without making a sound. Crimson pools began spreading beneath their heads.
SUPPRESSED GUNFIRE.
"AMBUSH!" Vance roared, firing three quick shots toward the shadows of the garage pillars. STAT! STAT! STAT!
"Get her out of here!" Vance yelled to the agent in the driver's seat.
The black SUV’s tires shrieked against the smooth concrete floor as the driver slammed his foot onto the accelerator. The heavy vehicle surged forward toward the exit ramp.
THU-THU-THU-THU-THU!
A hail of high-caliber, suppressed automatic fire tore through the garage darkness. The heavy bulletproof glass of our SUV shattered into spiderweb patterns, holding together under the massive impact, but the front tires exploded with a loud POP! POP!
The vehicle swerved wildly out of control, slamming violently into a thick concrete support pillar!
CRASH!
The air bags deployed with a deafening bang. My head slammed hard against the back of the front seat, sending a blinding flash of white light across my eyes. Pain shot through my neck and shoulders.
Through the cloud of powder smoke filling the cabin, I saw the driver unconscious over the steering wheel, blood trickling down his forehead.
"Lena..." Vance’s voice called out weakly from outside the passenger side.
I forced my eyes open, struggling against the dizziness, and dragged myself out of the crumpled rear door.
Agent Vance was lying on the concrete floor three feet away, clutching a severe wound near his shoulder. Blood was soaking rapidly through his dark suit jacket.
"Run..." Vance gasped, trying to raise his gun with his shaking left hand. "Lena... get to... the street..."
Through the smoke rising from the wrecked engine, three tall, heavily built figures stepped out of the darkness.
They weren't dressed like Clara’s amateur street mercenaries. They wore sleek, unmarked dark tactical uniforms with advance night-vision gear and high-end silenced submachine guns. They moved with absolute, military precision.
The lead operator walked slowly toward us, stepping over the shattered glass. He lowered his weapon slightly, looking down at Agent Vance on the floor. Without saying a word, he pulled a small silver device from his chest rig, pressed it against Vance's neck, and fired a localized electric charge. Vance’s body tensed once before going completely limp and unconscious.
The leader turned his head toward me.
His eyes, visible beneath his tactical helmet, were cold, pale blue, and totally devoid of human emotion. He reached into his tactical vest, pulled out a small, sleek tablet, and held it out toward me.
When he spoke, his voice was smooth, cultured, and carried a faint, heavy Eastern European accent.
"Miss Lena Carter," the man said softly, his voice chillingly calm despite the carnage around us. "My employer has been waiting eight long years for this meeting."
I backed up against the smoking wreckage of the SUV, my hand secretly feeling around inside my coat pocket for the encrypted hard drive.
"Who are you?" I demanded through gritted teeth, refusing to show the terror freezing my veins.
"My name is Viktorov," the man replied, holding up the tablet screen. On the display was a live video feed of a luxurious, dark-paneled room.
Sitting in a massive high-backed leather chair behind a grand mahogany desk was an elderly woman with silver hair pulled back into a tight braid. She wore an immaculate white silk suit and held a crystal glass of amber liquid in her thin, wrinkled hand.

She looked up at the camera, her cold green eyes piercing straight through the screen.
"Hello, Lena," the woman on the screen spoke, her voice smooth as velvet and cold as ice. "I am Baroness Katerina Volkov. And I believe you are currently holding forty-two million dollars of my personal money."
