Chapter 9 - THE SKY-HIGH CHESS MATCH

The ClimbAt twelve thousand feet, the air over the Rocky Mountains was brutal. Inside the cabin of Asteron Flight One, the thirty corporate executives were gripped by absolute panic. The aircraft was climbing at an impossibly steep angle, the engines screaming at maximum continuous thrust.

In the cockpit, Marcus was pulling on the yoke with both hands, his face red with exertion, his feet slamming against the rudder pedals. "The system is ignoring manual inputs! It’s completely locked out! The autopilot won't disengage!"

Victoria stood in the cockpit doorway, holding onto the bulkhead for dear life. "Daniel said it’s a logic bomb triggered by GPS coordinates! Can we mask the GPS sensors?"

"They’re hardwired into the primary navigational matrix!" Marcus yelled back, the plane shaking violently as it hit clear-air turbulence. "If I cut the GPS, the flight computers will think we’ve suffered an instantaneous system failure and drop the nose anyway! We’re trapped in the loop!"

Five hundred miles away, in his dark basement workshop, Daniel’s fingers were a blur across his keyboard. He had his laptop running at maximum overclock, the cooling fans whining like a miniature jet engine.

"Think, Daniel, think," he muttered to himself, his eyes scanning thousands of lines of encrypted data. "The Horizon Group is transmitting the override signal via an encrypted satellite downlink. They’re using a commercial communication satellite as a proxy."

He couldn't hack the satellite—it would take days to crack the military-grade encryption. And he couldn't upload the virus they wanted; it would ruin millions of lives and ground every aircraft on the Eastern Seaboard.

He had to find a third way.

He looked at the logic bomb’s code structure. It was a conditional statement:

$$\text{IF } \text{GPS\_COORD} == \text{TARGET\_COORD} \rightarrow \text{SET } \text{ELEVATOR\_TRIM} = -90^\circ$$

The target coordinate was exactly over the highest peak of the Rockies.

"They’re using the aircraft's internal clock to synchronize the GPS data stream," Daniel realized aloud. "If the clock and the GPS don't match, the logic bomb will assume an anomaly and pause the trigger sequence for a diagnostic rebuild."

Daniel didn't try to stop the plane. Instead, he targeted the commercial weather data stream that the aircraft automatically downloaded every sixty seconds to calculate fuel efficiency.

He wrote a rapid-fire script, wrapping a specialized data packet inside a standard meteorological update. He masked the packet to look like a routine barometric pressure correction from the Denver airport tower.

He hit ENTER.

The packet shot through the satellite link, penetrating the Asteron jet's communication sub-processor.

On his screen, the countdown timer for the logic bomb suddenly glitched. The numbers warped from 00:12:43 to 99:99:99.

"Yes!" Daniel slammed his fist on the table. He had successfully spoofed the aircraft's internal environmental clock, tricking the primary computer into believing it was currently three o’clock in the morning in a completely different time zone. The logic bomb halted, entering a validation loop.

But his triumph was short-lived.

A sharp, metallic clunk echoed from the front door of his house upstairs.

The security alarms didn't go off. The wires had been cut from the outside.

Daniel froze. His hand slowly drifted down toward the underside of his workbench, where a standard-issue military sidearm was magnetically secured in a hidden holster.

The basement door at the top of the stairs creaked open.
