Chapter 6 - The Final Prescription (The Twist Ending)

Six months later.
The new headquarters of the Ritchie Syndicate wasn't a hidden penthouse or a smoky backroom. It was a massive, state-of-the-art medical rehabilitation center on the North Side of Chicago, funded entirely by clean assets that Salvatore had systematically separated from his family’s old illegal enterprises.
Salvatore sat in a luxurious leather chair in the top-floor office, watching the snow fall over Michigan Avenue. He was wearing a tailored three-piece suit. Beside his chair stood a polished cane, but he hadn't used it all morning. He could walk perfectly now.
The door opened, and Serena walked in. She was no longer wearing dark green scrubs; she wore a stunning, elegant emerald dress that accentuated her beautiful, full-figured curves. Her black hair was styled perfectly, and on her left ring finger, a massive black diamond ring caught the light.
She was now the Director of the Foundation, and Salvatore’s wife.
“The board meeting is in ten minutes, Mr. Ritchie,” Serena said, a playful smile on her lips as she walked behind his chair, her hands coming down to rest on his shoulders, applying that same familiar, comforting pressure.
Salvatore closed his eyes, leaning into her touch. “Let them wait. I want to enjoy the view with my wife.”
He stood up, turning to face her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her soft, solid body close to his. “You saved me twice, Serena. Once from the bullet, and once from myself.”
Serena smiled, kissing his cheek. “I told you, I’m a capable woman.”
Just then, Salvatore’s new assistant, a young man named Leo, rushed into the office without knocking. His face was completely bloodless.
“Boss... Madam... you need to see this,” Leo stammered, holding a tablet with trembling hands. “The federal investigators... they just unsealed the secret files from the 2006 dock fire. The ones your uncle Anthony kept hidden in a secure vault.”
Salvatore’s brow furrowed. “What about them? Anthony is dead. The past is buried.”
“No, sir,” Leo whispered, looking at Serena with eyes full of terror. “The files include the original payroll and the arson report. The man who ordered the fire at the docks twenty years ago wasn't your father, Salvatore.”
Salvatore froze. “What are you saying?”
“The report shows that the foreman—Serena’s father—was heavily in debt to a rival gang,” Leo read from the screen, his voice cracking. “He was paid half a million dollars to set the fire himself to destroy the Ritchie inventory. But he didn't know his family was inside the office. The Ritchie family didn't trap them... Serena’s father trapped his own family for money, and your father actually tried to save them.”
The tablet fell from Leo’s hands as Salvatore slowly turned his head to look at Serena.
Serena didn't look shocked.
She didn't cry.
Instead, a slow, chillingly beautiful smile spread across her round face. The warmth in her eyes completely vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating brilliance that belonged to a master chess player.
“You... you already knew,” Salvatore whispered, his heart stopping as pieces of the puzzle suddenly slammed into place. The way she had arrived at his penthouse so easily. The way she knew exactly how to manipulate his nerve pain. The way she had survived the attack.
“Of course I knew, Salvatore,” Serena said, her voice smooth and sweet as honey, yet sharp as a scalpel. She walked over to the desk, picking up a glass of water and taking a slow sip. “My father was a coward who tried to burn me alive for a paycheck. Your family was just the convenient scapegoat I used to get past your guards.”
Salvatore stepped backward, his hand instinctively reaching for his cane. “Why? Why do all of this? Why save my life if it wasn't about revenge?”
Serena leaned against the desk, looking at him with absolute possession.
“Because a smart woman doesn't destroy a throne, Salvatore,” she whispered, walking toward him, her emerald dress rustling like a snake in the grass. She reached out, her fingers gently touching the scar on his chest where the car bomb had hit him—the exact spot she had spent six months healing. “A smart woman finds a broken king, heals him, marries him, and takes the throne for herself. You control Chicago, my love... but I control you.”
Salvatore stared at his wife, a cold sweat breaking out on his neck. He had thought he was the monster who tamed a saint.

But as Serena smiled and kissed him deeply, tasting of sweet mint and cold ambition, the most feared crime boss in Chicago finally realized the truth:
He hadn't hired a nurse. He had hired his new master.
