The café was bustling. Beatrice sat at table seven, enjoying a warm breakfast. Owen and Ruby sat across from her.
As they ate, the same electronic alarm sounded from the dessert case.
Owen stood up immediately, not as the Director, but as the man who cared about the details. He walked to the panel, fixed the compressor in seconds, and sat back down.
“The most important logistics in the world,” he said, looking at Ruby, “are the ones that keep people fed and warm.”
Beatrice raised her coffee mug. “To the man who saw what others chose to ignore.”
