Chapter 1 - The First Whisper of WarThe absolute silence that followed our entrance did not last. Wealthy society is built on the art of pretending, and within three seconds, the murmur of expensive champagne flutes and forced pleasantries resumed. But the air had fundamentally changed. It tasted like ash and ozone.

Caleb Reynolds stood frozen on the elevated dais next to Khloe Davies, his hand hovering awkwardly over her waist as if he had forgotten how to hold a bride. Khloe, radiant in a custom-designed lace gown that must have cost more than my first car, squinted in confusion, trying to process why the most feared man in the financial underworld was standing next to the girl her husband had left in financial ruins.

"Roman," Judge Arthur Davies muttered, his voice carrying an icy edge as he stepped down from the dais to intercept us. The federal judge looked like a man who spent his life signing execution orders with a gold-plated pen. His eyes darted from Roman’s tailored lapels to my black silk dress, taking in every detail with predatory precision. "I wasn't aware your schedule allowed for social calls. Especially not family weddings."

"Judge Davies," Roman replied, his voice a low, smooth baritone that required no amplification to command the room. "I never miss a chance to witness a union backed by such... promising assets. Besides, Sadi extended the invitation. How could I refuse a lady?"

Caleb finally found his footing, marching down the steps with a face drained of color. "Sadi. We need to talk. Privately."

"There is nothing private to discuss, Caleb," I said, my voice steady in a way that shocked even me. The six months of working 14-hour shifts at the Continental, scrubbing counters, balancing illegal ledgers, and watching men twice my age tremble at Roman’s glance had burned away whatever fragile girl Caleb had discarded. "You invited me. I RSVP'd. Now, I’m drinking your champagne."

Caleb's jaw tightened. "You brought a mobster to my wedding."

"Careful, Reynolds," Roman interjected smoothly, stepping half an inch closer to Caleb. The psychological pressure radiating off Roman was palpable; the younger man instinctively recoiled. "That word is so unprofessional. Call me a stakeholder. After all, Sadi and I share financial ties. Don't we, Sadi?"

"We do," I confirmed, meeting Caleb’s wide, terrified eyes. "Every single dollar of it."
