Chapter 7 - The Empire Strikes Back

The interior of the abandoned industrial warehouse in the Chicago suburbs was dark, damp, and smelled of motor oil and old concrete. A single overhead bulb cast a harsh yellow glow over a massive oak table covered in blueprints, financial ledgers, and firearms.
I sat on a wooden crate near a space heater, shivering violently in a dry oversized flannel shirt Dante had handed me, wrapping my bandaged hands around a steaming mug of black coffee.
Across the room, standing under the harsh light, was Nicholas Castellano.
He had changed out of his hospital gown into a sharp, tailored black suit that fit his lean, formidable frame like armor. The bandage on his temple was fresh, but the blank, lifeless stare of the coma patient was entirely gone. He looked every bit the feared crime boss of Chicago.
In front of him stood Dante and four armed lieutenants, listening in stunned silence as Nicholas laid out his plan.
"Miller thought he buried me," Nicholas said, his deep voice echoing coldly through the cavernous warehouse. "He thought he could take my territory, absorb my distribution lines, and hand my syndicates over to the Outfit in New York while I lay rotting in a hospital bed."
"Boss, half the inner circle thinks you're still dead," Dante said, stepping forward. "Word is spreading that the hospital is scrubbing the records. If we strike now, we'll be fighting a war on two fronts."
Nicholas turned his dark, piercing eyes toward Dante. A cruel, calculated smile played across his lips.
"Let them think I'm dead," Nicholas murmured softly. "Let them walk right into our trap. When the rats come out to divide the cheese, we burn the whole house down."
He slowly turned his gaze away from his men and looked across the dim room straight at me. The harsh warehouse lights caught the sharp angles of his face. He walked over, his heavy leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the concrete floor, until he was standing right in front of me.
The room fell completely silent. All eyes turned toward the twenty-seven-year-old nursing student who had broken him out of St. Jude's.
Nicholas stopped just inches away, reaching down to gently take my coffee mug and set it on a nearby crate. He looked down at me, the hardened mafia boss softening just a fraction into a man who owed his life to a stranger.
"You saved my life, Clara," Nicholas said quietly, his voice low enough that only I could hear. "And you saw things you were never supposed to see. Which means... you can never go back to your old life."
My heart skipped a beat. "Are you threatening me, Nicholas?"
Nicholas chuckled—a deep, rich sound that seemed to chase the chill right out of the room.
"Threatening you?" He shook his head, holding out his hand to help me stand up from the crate. "I'm offering you a promotion. Every empire needs a trusted hand at the top. And as for your nursing school debt..."

He turned around, gesturing to the open ledger on the table, where a wire transfer confirmation for two million dollars flashed on a laptop screen.
"...consider it paid in full. Welcome to the family, Clara."
