Chapter 6 - THE BLACKMAIL LEDGERThree men in dark tactical gear swarmed into the kitchen, led not by police officers, but by Marcus Vance—the head of security for Sterling Enterprises whom I had met through my father's old business associates.

Rachel dropped her wineglass, shattering it against the tile floor. "What is this?! Who are you?!"

Marcus ignored her entirely, walking straight past her and placing a thick leather-bound ledger onto the kitchen island. He looked at me, giving a respectful nod.

"Mrs. Ward," Marcus said calmly. "Your husband’s safe deposit box at the Swiss-American bank in downtown Washington was just seized under federal warrant. Inside wasn't just corporate money. It was your sister’s bank statements showing direct payoffs from Julian Sterling’s syndicate."

Rachel’s face turned the color of curdled milk. She lunged for her handbag on the counter, pulling out her car keys. "I'm leaving."

"You aren't going anywhere, Rachel," a deep voice echoed from the hallway.

Mark walked into the kitchen. He looked pale, exhausted, and broken, his wrists bruised from the handcuffs he had worn for twenty-four hours.

"Mark?" Rachel stammered, backing away. "You're... you're supposed to be in jail!"

"I made a deal with the federal prosecutor, Rachel," Mark said, his voice hollow and dead. "I confessed to the embezzlement, yes. But I also handed over every encrypted text message where you blackmailed me into stealing the sedatives for your syndicate bosses in exchange for keeping my gambling debts quiet."

Mark turned his eyes toward me, tears welling in his eyes. "Sarah... I was a coward. I let gambling ruin our lives. But I never wanted to hurt Emma. I swear to you on my life."

I looked at my husband—a man who had betrayed my trust, lied to my face, and nearly destroyed our family—yet stood there ready to take down the real evil in the room.

"It doesn't matter what you swear, Mark," I said coldly. "Our marriage ended the moment you brought those drugs into this house."

Suddenly, Rachel let out a shrill, hysterical laugh.

"You think you've won?!" Rachel shrieked, pulling a small silver detonator remote from her coat pocket. "If I go down, this entire house goes up in flames! I rigged the gas line in the basement twenty minutes ago!"
