Chapter 9 - THE NEW ERAThree months later.

The grand courtroom of the Federal District Court of Virginia was packed to capacity.

Julian Sterling, his niece Celeste, and my sister Rachel sat at the defense table in matching orange jumpsuits, listening impassumately as the federal judge read out the final verdicts.

“Rachel Vance: Guilty on all counts of grand larceny, conspiracy to commit murder, corporate forgery, and child endangerment. Sentence: Life imprisonment without the possibility of parole.”

Gavel pounded.

Rachel didn't cry. She didn't scream. She simply stared straight ahead, her face a mask of bitter, defeated ice, as federal marshals grabbed her arms and led her away through the iron doors.

Sitting in the front row of the gallery, I sat tall, wearing a sharp charcoal-gray business suit.

Beside me sat Arthur Pendelton, my family’s veteran attorney, holding a fresh legal folder.

"The federal asset recovery division has officially returned ninety percent of the embezzled trust funds," Arthur whispered, handing me a document. "And the board of Sterling Enterprises has voted unanimously to appoint you as the sole voting chairwoman of the entire corporation."

I looked at the legal papers. The empire my father had built—the legacy my sister and husband had tried to steal and burn to the ground—was finally restored. And this time, it was entirely in my hands.
