Chapter 5 - THE UNTOLD TRUTHTwo weeks passed.

Through grueling daily physical therapy, I managed to stand up on my own two feet for the first time, holding onto the parallel bars in the hospital rehabilitation center. The pain was excruciating, but looking down at Noah and Lily sitting in their stroller, watching me with big, bright eyes, gave me an invincible wave of energy.

While I was learning to walk again, Daniel Cho had been digging deep into the financial records of Vanguard Holdings during the audit triggered by Claire’s attempted fraud.

One evening, Daniel entered my room with an expression I had never seen on his face before. He looked grim, almost shaken.

“Mara,” he said, closing the door firmly behind him. “We finished auditing the offshore accounts and the property trust records set up during your late husband David’s final months.”

I sat up in bed, my heart instantly racing. “What did you find, Daniel? Was Claire stealing more than we thought?”

“It wasn’t just Claire,” Daniel said, pulling out a set of yellowed legal documents from four years ago. “Mara... when David was diagnosed with terminal cancer, he established a $2 million irrevocable educational trust fund for Noah and Lily. Do you remember signing the trustee authorization papers while you were at his bedside in the hospice?”

“Yes,” I nodded, my voice trembling. “I signed them. David wanted to ensure the twins’ college education and future security were completely untouchable.”

“You signed the papers, Mara,” Daniel said softly. “But you didn’t sign the amendment executed three months later, which transferred the secondary trusteeship and power of attorney over that specific trust to your father, Richard Vance.”

I stared at him in utter disbelief. “What?! I never signed any amendment! I didn't even know an amendment existed!”

“We had a forensic handwriting expert analyze the signature on the amendment today,” Daniel continued, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “It was a forged signature, executed by your sister Claire, witnessed and notarized by your father.”

A cold chill ran down my spine. “What did they do with the money, Daniel?”

“Over the last three years, while you were grieving David and working sixteen-hour days to keep your company afloat, your father and sister systematically drained $1.4 million out of your orphan twins’ trust fund.”

The room went dead quiet.

My hands clenched into tight fists, my fingernails digging so deeply into my palms that they nearly drew blood.

I had tolerated them exploiting me. I had tolerated them treating me like a bank account. I had tolerated them calling me ungrateful, cold, and selfish.

But stealing from my dead husband’s bequest to his fatherless babies?

That wasn't just greed. That was pure, unadulterated evil.

“Daniel,” I whispered, my voice chillingly soft, filled with a terrifying, absolute clarity. “Where is that money right now?”

“They used $800,000 of it to pay off illegal gambling debts your father accumulated at offshore casinos,” Daniel revealed. “And the remaining $600,000 was funneled directly into an unregistered holding company under Claire’s name to buy a luxury beachfront condo in Miami.”

I looked over at my babies sleeping peacefully in their cribs.

“File criminal charges,” I commanded. “Grand theft, wire fraud, identity theft, and embezzlement of a minor’s trust. Do not offer a plea deal. Do not accept a settlement. I want every single one of them in federal prison.”
