Chapter 1 - The Unspoken Mark

Vanessa’s hand trembled so violently that her diamond bracelet clattered against the marble table. She reached out, her long, manicured finger pointing directly at the base of Noah’s tiny right ear. Beneath a soft tuft of dark hair sat a unique, crescent-shaped birthmark—a tiny crimson mark that defied every lie Grant Ashford had built his life upon.
“That mark...” Vanessa’s voice cracked, turning into a strangled whisper. “Grant, you told me it was genetically impossible. You said the Ashford birthmark died with your brother.”
Grant slammed both hands onto the table and pushed himself up, his chair screeching against the hardwood floor. “Vanessa, shut your mouth!” he roared, his legendary composure shattering into jagged pieces.
Martin Bell, my attorney, leaned forward, his sharp eyes darting between the three of us. “Mr. Ashford, I suggest you take a seat before my client files an immediate motion for contempt and emergency custody enforcement.”
“He can’t have children,” Vanessa blurted out, ignoring Grant’s desperate glare. She turned her panicked eyes onto me. “Five years ago, after his cancer diagnosis, Grant underwent a complete procedure. He is clinically, permanently sterile! I paid off the chief of medicine at Mount Sinai myself to bury those records so the Ashford Capital board wouldn’t panic! So how does that baby have the Ashford family crest on his skin?”
The air left the room in one collective gasp. Grant looked like a man standing before a firing squad.

I didn’t flinch. I reached down, gently shielding Noah’s ear with my hand, and looked straight into my husband’s bloodshot eyes.
“You thought you erased every trace of your past, Grant,” I said, my voice cutting through the thick silence like a scalpel. “You thought medical records and shell companies could hide who you really are. But blood doesn't lie. And neither do dead men.”
