Chapter 6 - The Trap Springs ShutKayla didn't flinch.

As the multi-ton armored Mercedes barreled down on her with blinding speed, she calmly pulled her right hand out of her pocket. In her grip was a heavy military-grade magnetic explosive charge, scavenged from an old cache Richard had hidden a decade ago.

With a flick of her wrist, she hurled the disk directly at the grille of the oncoming SUV.

Clang.

The magnetic charge locked onto the steel frame dead center.

Kayla dove to the side, rolling gracefully across the wet asphalt just as the SUV roared past her, kicking up a blinding sheet of spray.

"Idiot!" Julian laughed from the backseat. "She missed completely! Turn the car around and—"

Click.

The remote detonator in Kayla's hand clicked twice.

BOOM.

The front end of the Mercedes erupted in a blinding flash of orange fire and twisted shrapnel. The heavy engine block shattered under the force of the blast, lifting the front tires off the ground before the vehicle slammed hard into a telephone pole, smoking and groaning in agony.

Inside the wreckage, airbags deployed in a puff of white dust. The driver slumped over the steering wheel, unconscious.

Julian Hart coughed, spitting blood onto his pristine leather collar. He kicked his door open, stumbling out onto the wet pavement, a silver-plated pistol trembling in his grip.

"Who the hell are you?!" Julian screamed into the rain, aiming wildly into the shadows. "Show yourself, you psychotic bitch!"

Step by step, boots splashing through the puddles, Kayla walked out from the shroud of the oak trees. She removed her cap, letting the rain soak her dark hair, her eyes locked dead onto Julian’s terrified face.

"Ten years, Julian," she said softly, her voice carrying an eerie, calm resonance that made the hair on the back of his neck stand up. "You stole my husband. You stole my life. You thought I was just a helpless widow on a dying street."

Julian’s eyes widened in sudden, horrifying recognition. The voice. The posture. The terrifying stillness.

"Richard's... wife?" Julian whispered, his face draining of all color. "No... that's impossible. You were supposed to be broken!"

"I was," Kayla replied, raising her pistol and leveling it squarely between his eyes. "Until you threatened my dog."
