Chapter 10 - The Sovereign of ShadowsThree weeks later, the snow began to fall over Manhattan, dusting the grand iron gates of a newly rebuilt and heavily fortified estate in Westchester.

The media called it a mysterious gas explosion that wiped out a prominent shipping conglomerate in Queens. The police files closed the case due to a lack of evidence. But the underworld knew the truth: the Syndicate ofamma had been completely, systematically dismantled in a single night of absolute, merciless purge. Not a single leader remained alive to tell the tale.

Inside the sprawling mansion, the east drawing room was warm and bright, filled with the soft sound of laughter.

Mia sat on the plush Persian rug, meticulously feeding pieces of fish to a very fat, very spoiled gray cat with one white foot, while a butler delivered a tray of fresh cookies.

Clara stood by the window, watching the snow descend, wearing an expensive cashmere shawl and looking far more at peace than she had in years.

Bennett walked into the room, his long dark coat slung over one arm. He looked different—still terrifyingly imposing, still the undisputed sovereign of New York’s shadows—but the hollow emptiness in his eyes was gone, filled by something he had thought burned to ash four years ago.

"Uncle Bennett!" Mia chirped happily, running over and grabbing the hem of his trousers. "Can we build a snowman in the garden today? Walter said he'd help, but he’s too slow because of his arm!"

Bennett looked down, a rare, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. He knelt down to her level, gently brushing a stray lock of dark hair from her forehead—the exact same gesture he used to make in his memories of Elena.

"Only if you promise to wear your winter coat, little cat," Bennett said softly.

Mia beamed, turning back to her toys.

Bennett stood up, meeting Clara’s gaze across the room. She offered a small, grateful smile, raising her teacup in a silent toast to the strange, twisted fate that had brought them together out of the dark.

Bennett raised his hand in acknowledgment, knowing the world outside his gates would always be full of enemies, wolves, and shadows. But as he looked at the little girl laughing by the fire, he knew one thing with absolute certainty:

No one would ever breach his fortress again.
