Chapter 9 - The Truth UnveiledTwo hours later, deep inside a secure safehouse in downtown Manhattan, the adrenaline had faded, leaving behind a heavy, suffocating silence.

Clara sat on a velvet sofa, a cup of hot tea cooling in her hands, while Mia had finally fallen asleep curled up on the cushions, Button purring softly beside her.
Bennett stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering neon skyline of the city he ruled. Walter walked into the room, holding a thick manila folder bearing the seal of a private investigative firm.
"The DNA results came back twenty minutes ago, Boss," Walter said quietly, his voice laced with shock.
Bennett didn't turn around. "And?"
"Clara is Elena’s biological sister," Walter said, laying the papers out on the mahogany table. "When Elena’s parents died in a fire in Syracuse twenty-five years ago, the family was split up. Elena was older—she ran away to the city and changed her last name. The younger sister, Clara, was placed in the foster system and eventually adopted by the Vance family."
Bennett closed his eyes. The room seemed to tilt.
"Elena never told me," Bennett whispered, the realization cutting deeper than any bullet wound. "She thought... she thought she had no one left."
"She protected her sister by keeping her away from your world, Boss," Walter added gently. "And the Syndicate... they found out about Clara six months ago. They used her as leverage to get to you. They didn't know about Mia until tonight."
Bennett turned around slowly, walking over to the sofa where Clara sat. She looked up at him, her amber-flecked eyes shining with unshed tears.
"You knew her," Clara whispered.
"I loved her," Bennett corrected softly, kneeling beside the sofa—not out of weakness this time, but out of profound, aching reverence. "More than my own life. And I failed to protect her family from the shadows I brought into our home."
"You saved us tonight," Clara said, her voice trembling. "What happens now?"

Bennett looked over at sleeping little Mia, whose soft breathing was the only peaceful sound in a room haunted by ghosts.
"Now," Bennett Cross said, his voice hardening into a vow that would echo through the underworld like a death sentence, "we hunt down every last viper that dared to touch my family. And you and Mia... you will never have to run again."
