Chapter 2 - THE WHISPER OF AN EMPIREThe silence that followed Iris’s declaration was absolute.

Julian Vance’s face turned from red to an alarming shade of chalk white. He took a sharp step back, his eyes darting frantically toward the cluster of society columnists and journalists whispering near the champagne fountain.

"That’s absurd," Julian hissed, his voice pitching slightly upward before he reined it in. "The child is talking nonsense. Ava, get these girls out of here immediately, or I'll have hotel security throw this—this mechanic out on his ear."

Ava stood frozen. Her heart was hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird. She looked down at Iris, then across at Julian, and for a terrifying second, the pristine illusion she had maintained for the past two years began to fracture.

She remembered the night Julian had broken off their engagement the first time—long before she discovered she was pregnant, back when her father’s company was still struggling. She remembered the cold words Julian had spoken when he thought her family was bankrupt: “Four children? An empire built on debt? You’re carrying a liability, Ava. I won't be dragged down by your family's sinking ship.”

He had abandoned her when she needed him most. And when she returned two years later as a billionaire titan who had successfully resurrected Sterling Logistics on her own, Julian had slithered back into her life, playing the doting fiancé, eager to merge his real estate dynasty with her shipping empire.

He had never met the quadruplets. She had kept them hidden in her private estate, protected by high walls and non-disclosure agreements, terrified of what Julian would do if he knew the children he once called a "liability" actually belonged to his own bloodline.

Because Julian wasn't just her current fiancé. Years ago, before he left her for a wealthy heiress in Europe, he had been the father of her unborn children—a truth she had buried beneath contracts, shell companies, and impenetrable silence.

"We are leaving, Julian," Ava said tightly, her voice laced with a dangerous chill as she grabbed her daughters' hands.

"Wait," Liam’s voice cut through the tension. He reached into his pocket and pulled out the yellow anchor button Iris had used as collateral. He crouched down, placing it gently into the little girl's palm. "You forgot your collateral, Iris. A deal is a deal."

Iris smiled brightly, her dark eyes flashing. "Thank you, Mr. Daddy-for-an-hour."

Julian glared daggers at Liam. "Touch that trash again, and you won't just lose your job, Brooks. I’ll make sure you never work another maintenance shift in this state."

Liam stood up, looking straight down into Julian’s arrogant eyes. "You talk a lot about what you can take away, Mr. Vance. But some things can't be bought, and they certainly can't be threatened."

Without another word, Liam turned, grabbed his maintenance jacket from the chair, and walked away through the service doors, leaving a wake of stunned silence behind him.

Ava didn't look back at Julian. She turned sharply, her red gown swirling around her ankles, and marched her four daughters toward the private exit elevator, ignoring the collective gaze of eight hundred elite guests staring at the cracks in her perfect life.
