Chapter 4 - THE VANCE EMPIRE’S SHADOWThe penthouse office overlooking downtown Seattle was a masterclass in intimidation. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows framed the glittering skyline, while minimalist black-steel furniture and abstract art worth millions projected an aura of untouchable power.

Julian Vance paced across the imported Turkish rug, a crystal tumbler of scotch clinking in his hand.
"I want that maintenance worker fired by morning," Julian snapped, not looking at the nervous-looking hotel manager standing near the double doors. "I want him blacklisted from every commercial building in the Pacific Northwest. If he steps foot inside another luxury venue, I’ll personally sue the property management into bankruptcy."
"Yes, Mr. Vance, right away," the manager stammered, nodding frantically before slipping out of the office.
Julian poured himself another finger of scotch, his mind racing. The incident at the gala had unnerved him. Not because of the children—he still viewed Ava’s quadruplets as an eccentric, slightly embarrassing quirk of her private life that he intended to quietly sideline once they were married—but because of the way Ava had looked at that mechanic.
There was a flicker of something in her eyes. Respect. Recognition. Human warmth. Things Ava never directed at him anymore. To Julian, Ava Sterling was the final crown jewel of his corporate ascension—a multi-billion-dollar merger that would solidify the Vance family’s dominance over Seattle’s real estate and shipping corridors for the next fifty years.
He didn't care about love. He cared about control.
The private elevator chime pinged softly, and Ava stepped into the penthouse suite. She had changed out of her red gala gown into a sharp, charcoal-gray business suit, her hair pulled back into a severe, elegant knot. She looked every inch the ruthless CEO of Sterling Logistics.
"There you are," Julian said, forcing a smooth, charming smile as he walked over to her, extending a glass of wine. "I was wondering if you got lost in the Zenith’s labyrinth. The gala aftermath has been a PR nightmare. The society columns are already asking questions about those children crashing the VIP section."
Ava didn't take the glass. She walked past him toward the massive glass window, looking out over the rain-slicked city lights below.
"They didn't crash the VIP section, Julian," Ava said evenly. "They were invited guests. They are my daughters."
Julian’s smile faltered, a cold edge creeping back into his voice. "Ava, we’ve discussed this. Publicly acknowledging four unruly children right before our merger announcement is a tactical error. Investors want stability. They want elegance. They don't want a ready-made daycare center complicating our corporate restructuring."
Ava turned slowly, her dark eyes locking onto his with a chilling intensity that made Julian pause mid-sip.
"Your corporate restructuring, Julian?" Ava asked quietly. "Or our wedding?"
"It’s the same thing, darling," Julian chuckled nervously, trying to bridge the gap with a patronizing step forward. "Once we’re married, your assets merge into Vance Holdings. I’ll handle the public relations, the board meetings, the media narrative. You can focus on... well, whatever mothers do behind closed doors."
Ava let out a cold, sharp laugh that sounded more like breaking glass.
"You think you're going to absorb Sterling Logistics, don't you?" Ava stepped closer, her voice dropping into a register so freezing it made Julian’s spine tingle. "You think because my father died and left me vulnerable four years ago, you can step in, play the knight in shining armor, and swallow my life's work whole."
"Ava, you're being dramatic," Julian scoffed, setting his glass down hard on the table. "This is business. It’s what smart couples do."
"No, Julian," Ava said, pulling a thin, black manila folder from her briefcase and tossing it onto his glass desk. "This is espionage."
Julian frowned, looking down at the folder. He picked it up, flicked open the cover, and watched the color drain entirely from his face.
Inside were bank statements, wire transfers, and shell-company audits dating back six months. They detailed a systematic, coordinated effort by Vance Holdings to secretly buy up distressed commercial debt held against Sterling Logistics—a hostile takeover attempt designed to force Ava into bankruptcy right before the wedding.
"Where... where did you get this?" Julian stammered, his polished corporate mask completely shattering.
"From a maintenance worker who knows how to look in the places you think nobody notices," Ava replied coldly. "You thought I was blind, Julian. You thought because I was raising four girls alone, I had lost my edge."
May you like
Julian slammed the folder shut, his eyes flashing with sudden, venomous rage. "You stupid bitch! You think a few leaked bank records can stop me? Without my real estate backing, your shipping contracts will collapse in forty-eight hours! You need me!"
"I don't need a parasite," Ava said, turning her back on him and walking toward the private elevator. "The engagement is off, Julian. And by morning, the SEC and the district attorney’s office will have copies of these financial audits. Pack your desk."
