Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

The courtroom was dead silent. You could have heard a pin drop on the thick carpet.
Judge Harrison slowly lowered his reading glasses, resting them on the wooden desk. His face had darkened into a mask of restrained fury. He looked from the screen down to Margaret Dawson, whose entire body was now shaking uncontrollably.
"Mrs. Dawson," Judge Harrison said, his voice dangerously quiet. "Is that you on that screen?"
Margaret’s lawyer swallowed hard, opening his mouth to object, but Margaret slumped forward, her spirit entirely broken, whispering hoarsely, "Yes... it's me."
"You filed a false police report, you fabricated criminal evidence against a three-year-old child, you subjected a minor to severe emotional distress and physical exposure, and you committed perjury by attempting to mislead this court regarding stolen property," Judge Harrison ticked off the charges on his fingers, his voice rising in volume with every word. "In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen such calculated, malicious, and sociopathic behavior disguised as family discipline."
Richard stood up abruptly from the gallery bench, his face purple with outrage. "Your Honor, wait a minute! She's my wife—she was just trying to teach the girl a lesson about—"
"Sit down, Mr. Dawson, or I will have you hauled out in handcuffs beside her," Judge Harrison barked, slamming his gavel down with a sharp crack that echoed like a gunshot. "Bailiff, confiscate Mr. Dawson's and Mrs. Dawson's phones immediately. I am issuing an immediate bench warrant for Margaret Dawson for felony filing of false police reports, child abuse, and fabrication of evidence. Furthermore, I am granting full, unconditioned sole legal and physical custody of the minor child, Emma Dawson, to her mother, Clara Dawson, with zero visitation rights granted to the paternal grandparents until further psychological evaluation."
Lauren gasped, burying her face in her hands as a collective murmur broke out among the courtroom observers.
But Judge Harrison wasn't finished.
"As for the financial claims," the judge continued, fixing his piercing gaze on the defense table, "given that the petitioner has documented extensive harassment, economic coercion, and malicious prosecution, I am issuing an immediate asset freeze on all joint properties and trust accounts held by Richard and Margaret Dawson, pending a civil damages trial for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress, with baseline compensatory and punitive damages preliminarily set at no less than two million dollars."
Two million dollars.
The number hung in the air like a guillotine blade.
Margaret let out a low, choked cry, sliding completely out of her wooden chair and collapsing onto the courtroom floor in a heap of designer fabric and shattered pride. Richard rushed down the aisle to catch her, shouting frantically for medical help, but the bailiffs merely stood over them with crossed arms, watching the mighty Dawsons crumble into dust.
I sat upright at the plaintiff's table, my hands resting calmly on the polished wood.

Marcus leaned over, whispering in my ear with a satisfied grin. "Well, Clara. It looks like the tables have officially turned."
"Not yet, Marcus," I replied softly, my eyes fixed on the trembling form of my former mother-in-law on the floor. "We’re only halfway through."
