Chapter 3 - The Corrupt Web Unravels

Prosecutor Escalante collapsed back into his leather chair, sweat pouring down his forehead, soaking his high-end silk collar. The smooth, arrogant politician had vanished, replaced by a terrified man realizing he had walked directly into a bear trap.

Judge Rostova’s face was dark as a thundercloud. She hammered her gavel down hard, the sharp CRACK resounding like a thunderclap.

"Captain Estrada," Judge Rostova said, her voice dripping with controlled fury. "Are you telling this court that the Ministry of Education intentionally manufactured false criminal charges against a sixty-eight-year-old retired janitor to hide an internal embezzlement scheme?"

"I am not just telling you, Your Honor," Captain Camila Estrada replied, motioning toward the gallery doors. "I am bringing you the physical proof."

Camila snapped her fingers. Two armed federal officers stepped through the door, escorting a man in handcuffs. The man was impeccably dressed in an expensive designer suit, but his head hung low in utter shame.

It was Director Roberto Vargas—the high-ranking Chief Director of the Ministry of Education, and the primary architect of the lawsuit against Don Chuy.

The gallery erupted into chaos. Journalists who had sneaked into the back of the courtroom began furiously snapping photos, flashbulbs illuminating the dark room like lightning strikes.

"Order! Order in this court!" Judge Rostova slammed her gavel repeatedly until silence was restored. She pointed a finger at Director Vargas. "Explain yourself!"

Vargas trembled, looking frantically at Escalante. "It... it wasn't just me! Escalante promised me the court proceedings would be kept quiet! He said no one would defend an old, illiterate janitor! He said Jesús Estrada had no family, no connections, no money! We needed a fall guy for the state audit, or we were all going to federal prison!"

"You fool!" Escalante shrieked, jumping out of his chair. "Shut your mouth!"

"Silence!" Judge Rostova roared. She looked down at Don Chuy, her stern expression softening into deep, profound sorrow and respect.

"Don Jesús Estrada," Judge Rostova said gently. "Look at me, sir."

Don Chuy slowly lifted his head, his eyes red and swollen with tears.

"For thirty-four years," the judge said, her voice echoing with heavy emotional weight, "you swept the floors, cleaned the rooms, and protected the children of this city for minimum wage. And when this system failed you, when corrupt men tried to crush you under the weight of their own greed... you showed up alone, willing to sacrifice your remaining years to spare others."

She looked at the three formidable young women standing like an impenetrable wall of shield-bearers in front of the old man.

"The court hereby dismisses all charges against Jesús Estrada with full prejudice," Judge Rostova announced, hammering her gavel. "Furthermore, I order the immediate arrest of Prosecutor Arturo Escalante and Director Roberto Vargas on charges of conspiracy, forgery, prosecutorial misconduct, and grand embezzlement."

The bailiffs immediately stepped forward, grabbing Escalante’s arms and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto his wrists. Escalante sputtered and yelled, but he was dragged roughly out of the courtroom, his polished gold pen dropping to the floor and rolling uselessly under the benches.

Don Chuy sat frozen, unable to process the whirlwind of events. The heavy burden that had been crushing his chest for weeks suddenly evaporated, leaving him light, dizzy, and breathless.

Ximena, Mariana, and Camila turned toward him.

The fierce attorney, the brilliant analyst, and the hardened police captain—the three powerful women who had just brought down a corrupt state apparatus—all dropped to their knees around the old man’s chair.

"It’s over, Dad," Ximena whispered, resting her head against his trembling knee, tears breaking through her stoic legal mask. "Nobody is ever going to hurt you again."

"We told you when we were little, Dad," Mariana wept softly, holding his left hand. "You protected us when we were weak. Did you really think we wouldn't come back when you needed us?"

Camila took his right hand, pressing her cheek against his calloused palm. "You gave us a home, a name, and a future, Don Chuy. Today, we just paid back the first installment."

Don Chuy pulled his three girls into a tight, shaking embrace, sobbing openly into their hair as the courtroom burst into thunderous, spontaneous applause from the gallery.

But as the cheers echoed through Courtroom 402, Mariana quietly looked down at her encrypted laptop screen.

A new notification flashed across her display—a secret, encrypted file pulled from Director Vargas’s private server during the police raid.

Mariana’s smile instantly vanished. Her eyes widened in terror as she read the hidden document header:

PROJECT BENITO JUÁREZ: REAL ESTATE ACQUISITION & BIOLOGICAL ORIGINS FILE #001.

Mariana tapped Ximena’s arm, whispering in a voice trembling with sudden dread.

"Ximena... look at this."

Ximena leaned over and read the screen. Her breath caught in her throat.
