Chapter 4 - The House of Cards Collapses

The walk of shame back up the jet bridge and into the main terminal was something Vanessa and Derek will tell their therapists about for the rest of their lives—if they can afford one.

As the security officers escorted them through the crowded departure lounge, dozens of travelers turned to stare. Cameras flashed from smartphones. Someone near the baggage drop laughed out loud.

Waiting for them beside the customer service desk was me.

I hadn't moved an inch. I stood with my posture as straight as a steel girder, my worn brown leather planner held in my left hand like a general’s baton.

Vanessa broke away from the security guards, lunging toward me with her face twisted into an ugly, mask-like snarl of pure venom.

"You crazy, selfish old bitch!" Vanessa screamed, lunging across the velvet rope barrier. "You actually called the cops on your own family?! Over some petty vacation money?! You ruined our trip! You humiliated us!"

The security guards instantly yanked Vanessa back, pinning her arms behind her.

I didn't flinch. I didn't blink. I simply looked down at my fingernails for a brief second before raising my eyes to meet hers.

"Petty vacation money, Vanessa?" I asked, my voice dangerously soft, carrying a chilling authority that made even the guards pause. "Let’s talk about petty. Let’s talk about the seventy-four thousand dollars you quietly transferred out of my corporate pension fund last November to pay for your luxury kitchen remodel. Or should we talk about the three hundred thousand Derek took to bail out his third failed crypto startup—money that was legally earmarked for your children's college trust?"

Derek’s face turned the color of a ripe plum. He stammered, looking frantically at Emily. "Em! Tell her! Tell your mother she’s lying! Tell her we were going to pay it back!"

Emily stood a few paces back, holding Lucas and Sophie tightly by their hands. For the first time in ten years, Emily looked at her husband not with devotion or fear, but with absolute, crystalline clarity.

"Were you, Derek?" Emily asked quietly, her voice devoid of emotion. "Were you really going to pay it back? With what money? The money from the next business venture that fails in six months?"

"Emily! Don't you start!" Vanessa shrieked, thrashing against the guards. "Tell this lunatic to drop the charges or we’re through! You hear me? We’ll cut you off! You won't see a dime of our—"

"Your money?" I cut in, stepping forward so the heel of my shoe clicked sharply against the polished airport tile. "Vanessa, you have never earned a single legitimate dollar in your entire adult life. Every dress you are wearing, every bag you are clutching, every square foot of the suburban house you live in was bought, maintained, and subsidized by the retirement of a woman you thought you could trap in a living room with two cats."

I turned my gaze slowly from Vanessa to Derek, and finally to my daughter.

"The audit is underway," I said evenly. "By sunset, your bank accounts will be frozen, your credit cards will be declined at the terminal checkout, and the house you live in will be seized by the corporate estate for immediate liquidation."

Silence descended upon the terminal lobby.

"Mom..." Emily whispered, a single tear finally slipping down her cheek. "Where... where are we going to live?"

"That," I said, opening my leather planner to a fresh, blank page, "is a problem you are going to solve on your own. Exactly like adults."
