Chapter 6 - The Final AuditThe next morning, the sun rose over a house that finally belonged to its rightful owner.

The police had cleared the premises, the guests had fled into the night, and Marcus Vance’s forensic accounting team had taken over the study. Spread across the massive oak desk were binders upon binders of financial statements, corporate ledgers, offshore account numbers, and tax evasion records that David had spent years meticulously hiding.

I sat in the high-backed leather chair behind the desk—the chair my father used to sit in when he ran the family business—sipping a cup of black coffee.

My father stood near the window, staring out at the manicured lawn with dull, lifeless eyes. My mother sat on the small sofa in the corner, her hands trembling in her lap, looking fifty years older than she had yesterday.

"Elena," my father rasped, his voice sounding like dry paper rubbing together. "Please... drop the charges against David. He's your brother. If he goes to federal prison for corporate embezzlement and fraud, his life is over. Clara... she’s going to have a baby in a few months. Have mercy."

I didn't look up from the financial ledger I was reviewing. "Mercy, Father? Where was your mercy when you watched Clara spray me with rubbing alcohol on the porch? Where was your mercy when you slid two hundred dollars across the table and told me to find a cheap hotel?"

"We were scared!" my mother sobbed from the corner, burying her face in her hands. "The police... the trial... everyone in town was whispering about us! We had to protect the family name! David said if we didn't distance ourselves from you, the company would go under!"

I slowly closed the ledger, the heavy thud echoing in the quiet study. I stood up, walking over to the window and looking out at the morning fog rolling over the street.

"You didn't protect the family name," I said quietly. "You sacrificed your only daughter to save a coward. And in doing so, you handed me the keys to the entire empire."

Just then, the study door swung open, and Marcus Vance walked in, holding a fresh tablet of documents, a triumphant grin plastered across his face.

"Well, Elena, the morning audit is complete," Marcus announced, tossing a thick folder onto the desk. "Not only is the house officially back in your name as of 8:00 AM this morning, but we’ve also successfully frozen all corporate accounts belonging to Apex Logistics."

My father’s head snapped up in horror. "Frozen accounts? But... without operational capital, the company will default on its municipal transport contract by Friday! That's twelve million dollars down the drain!"

"Actually, it's worse than that," Marcus corrected cheerfully, adjusting his glasses. "Because the company was registered under fraudulent corporate structures with Elena's stolen credentials, the entire entity is now subject to immediate receivership. Meaning..." Marcus paused for dramatic effect, "...the courts are seizing Apex Logistics. And guess who the court-appointed primary creditor and majority shareholder now is, thanks to the debt restructuring you idiots signed off on last year?"

Marcus pointed a finger directly at me.

"Her."
