Chapter 12 - The Visitor from the DeepTen minutes later, the Kavanaugh estate was locked down—not by guards, but by architecture and engineering. Heavy steel shutters slid silently out of the stone window frames, sealing the ground floor in seconds.

In the high-ceilinged drawing room, Renick stood near the French doors, a heavy-caliber handgun resting on the mahogany table beside him. Belle sat on the sofa, her hands folded over her lap, while Micah stood quietly by the fireplace, his fingers resting near a concealed wall safe.
A heavy, measured knock echoed against the front oak door.
One. Two. Three. Four.
It wasn't the frantic pounding of an assassin or the chaotic banging of federal agents. It was the rhythmic, arrogant knock of someone who believed they owned the room before they even stepped inside.
Sully didn't wait for permission. He wrenched the heavy oak door open.
Standing on the stone porch, soaked in the cold Irish mist, was a tall man wearing a bespoke charcoal overcoat and a fedora that shadowed his face. He held a silver-headed cane in one hand and a thick manila envelope in the other.
“Sully,” the man said, his voice smooth, cultured, and dripping with old-money menace. “You’ve let yourself go a bit. The gray hair doesn't suit the enforcer look.”
Sully didn't lower his gun. In fact, the barrel rose an inch, aiming directly at the man’s chest. “Julian. I thought the Moretti family bled out two years ago.”
“Families bleed, Sully. But syndicates merely molt,” Julian Moretti said softly, stepping uninvited across the threshold.
Renick stepped out from the drawing room into the grand foyer, his presence eclipsing the hallway. His gray eyes locked onto the newcomer like a predator spotting a wounded stag.
“Julian,” Renick said, his voice a low, lethal growl. “Donti’s younger brother. I thought the federal prosecutors sent you packing to Sicily.”
Julian removed his fedora, shaking the cold rain from the brim. He smiled, revealing a row of unnaturally white teeth. “Donti was a brute, Renick. A fat, loud-mouthed dinosaur who thought running drugs and shaking down dockworkers was an empire. When your wife—excuse me, The Shadow Queen—shattered our holdings, she didn't destroy the Moretti family. She purified it.”
Julian tossed the thick manila envelope onto the heavy marble entry table. It slid across the stone and stopped right at Renick’s feet.
“What is this?” Renick demanded, not breaking eye contact.
“It’s an invitation,” Julian said smoothly. “Or, more accurately, a bill.”
Belle walked out of the drawing room, her steps slow and measured. She stopped beside Renick, looking down at the envelope before meeting Julian’s cold, dark eyes.
“You think because Donti is rotting in ADX Florence that you can walk onto our property and make demands?” Belle asked, her voice chillingly calm.
Julian chuckled, a dry, humorless sound. “Ms. Ashford—or should I call you Your Majesty in the underground circles? Let’s be entirely transparent. Three days ago, your offshore accounts in the Caymans experienced a massive data extraction. Every shell company, every proxy real estate holding, every logistical contract you control across Europe... has been mapped.”
Renick’s expression darkened into an abyss. He took a slow step forward, the sheer physical intimidation of the Vanguard making Julian’s smile falter for a fraction of a second.
“You touched my accounts?” Renick whispered.
“I didn't just touch them, Renick,” Julian said, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a venomous hiss. “I locked them. Every single cent is currently frozen behind a quantum encryption wall that only one hacker on earth can bypass. And that hacker happens to be sitting in a high-security black site in Marseilles, working exclusively for me.”
Julian’s eyes flickered past Renick and landed directly on Micah, who was standing near the drawing-room door.
“A brilliant boy, by the way,” Julian smiled coldly, looking back at Belle. “Takes after his mother. But children make terrible hostages when you have a billion dollars on the line. Here are my terms: You hand over full operational control of the European shipping lanes to the Moretti syndicate by midnight tonight... or I publish the home addresses, bank accounts, and daily schedules of every single family member you hold dear.”

Julian turned toward the open door, stepping back into the mist.
“Midnight, Renick,” Julian called out over his shoulder. “Don't be late.”
