Chapter 6 - A New Dawn and Lasting Justice

Six months later, the magnificent estate in Cuernavaca was quiet once again. The rose garden had been remodeled, the dark memories cleared away, replaced by vibrant sunflowers and a playground for Sofía.

The trial of Valeria Ortiz and Julian Vance had been the sensationalized trial of the decade. Both were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for first-degree murder, conspiracy, and financial fraud.

Mateo sat on the porch, holding a cup of coffee. The breeze was cool, carrying the sweet scent of the gardens.

Sofía ran across the lawn, laughing as she chased a golden retriever puppy Mateo had bought her. She looked happy, healthy, and her eyes—the eyes that looked so much like her mother's—sparkled with life.

Mateo reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, old diary. It was Elena’s. The police had recovered it from Julian’s safe during the investigation.

He opened to the very last page, written the night before she passed away. He had read it a hundred times, but the words never failed to bring tears to his eyes.

"My dearest Mateo, if you are reading this, it means I am no longer with you. Do not cry for me, my love. I have discovered what Julian and Valeria are doing. I know they are trying to hurt us. But I have hidden the evidence where they will never find it—inside the lining of Sofía's favorite childhood teddy bear. Protect our daughter, Mateo. She is our greatest treasure. I will love you forever."

Mateo looked up at Sofía, who was now hugging the puppy tightly.

They had found the evidence—a USB drive with all of Julian's fraudulent transactions and Valeria's blackmail emails—exactly where Elena had said it would be. It was the final nail in their coffins.

Elena had saved them, even from beyond the grave.

Sofía ran up to the porch, her cheeks rosy from running. "Daddy! Look! Bobby learned how to sit!"

Mateo smiled, kneeling down to hug his daughter tightly. He held her close, knowing that they were finally safe, finally free, and ready to start a beautiful new chapter—together.

"That's amazing, sweetheart," Mateo whispered, looking up at the sky. "Your mommy would be so proud of us."
