Chapter 9 - The Queen of the West SideThree months later, the copper-and-brass sign outside the newly renovated corporate tower on Michigan Avenue read Crowe & Harper Holdings.

The transition had sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld and corporate elite alike. The dismantling of the North Side Syndicate had left a power vacuum, but instead of plunging into a bloody turf war, the city’s financial landscape had undergone a seismic, permanent shift. Predatory loans were outlawed, community trust funds were booming, and at the center of it all stood Nina Harper—no longer a terrified waitress dodging groping hands, but a razor-sharp executive who ran the city’s most powerful real estate portfolio with absolute grace and unshakeable authority.
On a crisp November evening, Nina stood on the private wrap-around balcony of the penthouse, looking out over the glittering expanse of downtown Chicago. The wind whipped her dark hair around her shoulders, but she didn’t shiver. She wore a tailored charcoal pantsuit and a simple gold pendant necklace—her mother’s gift for her thirty-fifth birthday, paid for honestly, proudly, and safely.
A heavy, familiar weight pressed against her side.
Nina looked down. Cerberus sat majestically beside her, his scarred coat gleaming in the twilight, his amber eyes scanning the streetlights far below like a loyal gargoyle guarding his domain.
She reached down, scratching him right behind his cropped ears. The massive dog let out a deep, rumbling sigh of absolute contentment.
Footsteps echoed softly on the hardwood behind her, followed by the rich, unmistakable scent of cedar and aged bourbon.
“You’re going to spoil him,” Sebastian’s voice murmured as strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, pulling her flush against his chest. His chin rested comfortably on her shoulder, his breath warm against her neck.
“He earned it,” Nina smiled, leaning back into his embrace, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heartbeat. “He saved my life, remember?”
“He saved mine,” Sebastian corrected quietly, turning her gently in his arms so she was facing him. His dark eyes were fierce, filled with an intensity and devotion that belonged to her alone. “I spent half my life surrounded by wolves, Nina. I didn’t know what loyalty looked like until a broke cocktail waitress stood her ground against a pit bull.”
Nina laughed softly, placing her hands flat against his chest, feeling the solid wall of muscle beneath his shirt. “And now you’re stuck with me, Mr. Crowe. No pardons, no escape clauses.”

“I wouldn’t have it any other way,” Sebastian whispered.
He leaned down, capturing her lips in a deep, slow, deliberate kiss that tasted of victory, redemption, and a future neither of them ever thought they’d live to see.
