Chapter 20 - The Unshakable Foundation

The sun was setting behind the rolling hills, painting the evening sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and gold.
Back at the cottage, the garden was starting to wake up for another season of growth. The fresh green shoots of spring bulbs were poking through the dark, rich soil, refusing to be kept down by the winter frost.
Arianne and I sat side-by-side on the wooden porch swing, watching Gideon chase a bright red rubber ball across the lawn, his childish laughter floating up into the quiet evening air.
My old pickup truck sat parked in the driveway, smelling faintly of motor oil and garden mulch, completely unchanged by the billions of dollars that flowed through our family trusts.
“You know, Grandpa,” Gideon shouted breathlessly, running over to the porch with mud on his knees and a wide, joyful grin, “when I grow up, I want to fix trucks just like you!”
I smiled, picking my grandson up by the waist and hoisting him onto my knee, feeling the warm, uncomplicated perfection of the moment.

“Well, Gideon,” I whispered, looking past him to meet my daughter’s warm, loving gaze, “first you have to learn how to grow tomatoes.”
Arianne laughed, leaning her head against my shoulder as the evening stars began to twinkle one by one across the vast, peaceful sky. We had weathered the storm, outlasted the cruelty, and built something that could never, ever be broken.
