The corrupt leadership was entirely purged, the predatory loans were nullified through federal court settlements, and the company was rebranded as Vance-Chen Properties, dedicated to ethical transparency, community housing development, and strict corporate accountability.
My father and brother were locked behind federal prison bars, awaiting trial with little hope of seeing freedom anytime soon. Claire had fled the state to escape the social fallout, abandoned by the high-society friends who once fawned over her wealth.
And on a crisp December morning, I stood alone at the end of the grand wooden pier overlooking the northern Michigan lake where they had tried to bury me.
The water was cold, dark, and frozen over with a thick sheet of winter ice.
I looked down at my left wrist, tracing the faint, silvery scar where the rope had torn my skin. It no longer hurt. It was simply a reminder of what I had survived—and what I had conquered.
Footsteps crunched softly behind me on the snowy wooden planks.
Mara Chen walked up beside me, handing me a warm cup of coffee and smiling gently.
“The board restructuring is finalized, Evelyn,” Mara said quietly. “You are the sole majority owner and chairwoman of the entire portfolio.”
I took the cup, wrapped my hands around its warmth, and looked out across the frozen horizon where the golden winter sun was beginning to break through the clouds.
