Chapter 1 - THE TAPE PLAYS IN REAL TIMEThe atmosphere in the trauma bay shifted from clinical chaos to suffocating stillness. Officer Thompson held the tiny coin-sized audio recorder between his thumb and index finger like a piece of unexploded ordnance.

Beckett took another step backward toward the sliding glass doors, his expensive leather shoes squeaking faintly against the wet tile floor.

“Where are you going, Mr. Vance?” Thompson’s voice dropped an octave, laced with authority.

“I’m going to call my family attorney,” Beckett replied smoothly, though a micro-tremor in his jaw betrayed his terror. “My wife has severe mental health episodes. God knows what she put on that device to fabricate a narrative.”

Mary Vance stepped directly between her son and the officer, puffing out her chest beneath her cashmere scarf. “Officer, my son is a respected venture capitalist. My daughter-in-law is a documented manic-depressive. Are you really going to take the word of a metallic toy over a mother protecting her child?”

Dr. Hannah Scott didn't engage in their political dance. She simply plugged the micro-device into a secure, encrypted hospital reader that piped directly into the workstation audio monitor.

The speaker crackled.

“Pass the salt, darling,” Beckett’s voice boomed softly through the room, clear as crystal.

“You didn’t finish your soup, Clara,” Mary’s voice followed, sweet, syrupy, and sinister. “We spent a lot of time preparing it. You need your strength for the institutionalization papers tomorrow.”

“I’m not signing anything,” Clara’s recorded voice rasped, weak, heavy, clearly drugged. “I know what you did to my father’s trust.”

“You don't have a choice, Clara,” Beckett chuckled on the tape. “The doctor we paid off already filed the preliminary diagnosis. In twenty-four hours, Vance Enterprises belongs to me. Hold her hands, Mother.”

“Not the face this time, Beckett,” Mary’s cold whisper sliced through the recording. “The police need to believe she choked herself in a manic episode.”

Audio of shattering glass echoed, followed by the terrifying, wet sound of gasping for air, ribs cracking under immense weight, and Beckett’s harsh breathing as he strangled her.

The trauma bay went dead silent.

Officer Thompson didn't hesitate. He pulled his handcuffs from his utility belt with a metallic snap.

“Beckett Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and conspiracy.”

“This is a setup!” Beckett screamed, his pristine facade instantly shattering into ugliness. He lunged toward the stretcher—toward me—his eyes wild with desperation. “Clara, tell them! Tell them you made it up!”

Before he could reach my bed, two security guards tackled him to the floor, pinning his face against the cold linoleum. Mary shrieked, clutching her designer bag to her chest as Thompson clamped the steel cuffs around Beckett’s wrists.

I lay on the gurney, unable to speak, but as Beckett was dragged out through the double doors, screaming curses into the rainy night, my swollen eye locked onto his.

This wasn't the end of their nightmare. It was just Chapter One.
