Chapter 10 - The Road AheadOne year after the gala.

The front page of the Seattle Times featured a very different kind of headline: From Billionaire to Builder: How Camille Crowe Found Her Family in a Ballard Garage.

In the accompanying photo, Camille stood beside Warren, both of them wearing flannel shirts, laughing as they cut the ribbon for the new pediatric mobility wing. Chloe stood front and center, holding a golden oversized pair of scissors, her legs strong and steady beneath her.

The corporate towers of downtown Seattle still pierced the clouds, cold and indifferent. But down in Ballard, the lights were warm, the workshop was humming with life, and the ghosts of the past had finally been laid to rest in the ashes where they belonged.

Warren wrapped his arm around Camille’s waist as the crowd cheered, pulling her close against his chest.

She looked up at him, her heart no longer heavy with grief or protected by walls of wealth, but wide open to the simple, messy, beautiful truth of the present.

She had lost an empire, and she had gained a life.
