Chapter 15 - The Unraveling of Co-ConspiratorsThe trial accelerated rapidly on its third day when Sophia Lane’s defense attorney dropped a legal bombshell.

To secure a plea deal recommendation of probation and community service, Sophia’s legal team submitted a trove of encrypted voice memos recorded during late nights at the West End Biotech annex.
The courtroom audio system crackled to life as Judge Vance ordered the playback of the most damning recording.
The speaker’s voice filled the silent room—unmistakably Ethan’s, sharp and arrogant.
"Just push the paperwork through, Sophia. Claire is too buried in her hospital rotations to notice the metadata shift before the grant window closes. Once Meridian Health locks in the twelve-million-dollar acquisition, we'll cash out the equity, leave the university, and move our lab to Boston. She’ll get over it once she realizes we’re already gone."
A soft gasp rippled through the gallery.
Ethan’s head snapped up, his face draining of what little color remained as he stared furiously across the room at Sophia, who kept her eyes glued to the defense table, refusing to look back.
The audio continued, playing another memo where Ethan dismissed our four-year relationship as a "convenient institutional partnership" that had served its purpose.
When the recording clicked off, the courtroom was dead silent.
Judge Vance looked down from the bench, her expression stern and immovable. "Does the defense wish to dispute the authenticity of these recordings?"

Ethan’s attorney shook his head slowly. "No, Your Honor."
The betrayal was complete. Ethan had tried to use Sophia as his accomplice, and Sophia had recorded every word to use as her parachute. They were drowning in a sea of their own malice, and neither one had a life jacket left.
