Chapter 4 - The Stolen FormulaFor three agonizing seconds, Ethan didn't breathe. His eyes widened in absolute horror, the pupils blown wide as he stared at me, the color evaporating from his face until he looked like a corpse under the recessed LED lights.

"How... how could you possibly know about that?" he whispered, his voice trembling so violently the words barely formed.

"Did you really think I wouldn't check the institutional repository dashboard?" I asked, my voice remaining unnervingly calm. "When a critical file modification alert pings my secure server at 2:45 PM on a Friday—while I'm supposed to be getting married—I tend to look into it. Especially when the submitting author’s IP address matches the R&D wing where Sophia Lane sits."

Ethan opened his mouth, closed it, and then gripped the edge of the quartz counter, his knuckles turning chalky white. "Claire... it’s not what you think. The grant deadline for the West End partnership was today at 4:00 PM. If we didn't submit the updated peptide sequences, the entire institutional funding package for our phase-two trials would have been pulled by the board. Your name was... there was a clerical glitch in the portal formatting, and Sophia just temporarily slotted her administrative credentials in to push the payload through before the lock-out!"

"A clerical glitch?" I tilted my head, letting out a dry, humorless chuckle. "That's fascinating, Ethan, considering that under section four of our institutional IP agreement, substituting an administrative coordinator's name for a principal investigator on a primary patent filing constitutes intellectual property theft and a direct breach of academic ethics."

Ethan lurched forward, his hands slamming onto the counter. "It was an administrative fix! I was going to amend it on Monday morning! You’re blowing this completely out of proportion because you’re hurt about the courthouse!"

"No, Ethan," I said, my tone hardening into steel. "I'm not blowing it out of proportion. I'm filing criminal fraud charges with the university ethics committee and the federal patent office before the sun comes up."

The blood rushed back to Ethan’s face in a violent crimson wave. "You wouldn't do that. That would destroy my career! That would ruin the entire lab’s funding, and your name is on that paper too—it would destroy your reputation as well!"

"My reputation," I said, stepping closer until I could see the frantic pulsation in the vein at his temple, "is built on a decade of successful surgeries and peer-reviewed breakthroughs that I earned with my own hands, not stolen in a supply closet with a subordinate."

I turned my back on him and walked down the hallway toward the master bedroom, leaving him standing alone in the kitchen with his jewelry bag and his ruined life.

Behind me, I heard him shout my name, followed by the heavy thud of a fist hitting the wall. But I didn't stop. I walked into the bedroom, unzipped the pale blue dress that had cost me four years of my youth, and let it pool at my feet like water.
