Chapter 5 - The Desperate Trap

Viral Hook: "My ex-husband tried to black-mail me into coming back. He didn't know I was recording every single word."
When a predator is backed into a corner, they stop trying to look elegant. They start showing their teeth.
A month after the country club incident, the divorce proceedings were becoming ugly. Carter had refused to sign the standard settlement papers. Despite having been fired from the company, he was demanding a massive alimony payout, claiming that my sudden rise to power within his family’s former firm had sabotaged his earning potential.
One evening, I received a text from him.
I have the files from your father's 2018 tax audits. The ones he kept out of the public eye. Meet me at the old apartment at 8 PM, or they go to the federal prosecutors.
My heart thudded against my ribs. In 2018, my father had been involved in a massive international restructuring deal that had been heavily investigated. He had been cleared of any wrongdoing, but the raw, unredacted financial data contained sensitive trade secrets that could damage his investors if leaked. Carter had clearly stolen the files from our home office before he moved out.
I didn't call my father. I didn't call the police.
At 8:00 PM, I walked into our former penthouse apartment. The furniture was mostly gone, leaving empty spaces and echoes. Carter was standing by the floor-to-ceiling windows, a glass of whiskey in his hand. He looked thin, his eyes hollowed out by resentment.
"You actually came," he said, turning around with a bitter smile. "I guess the great Nadia Vance isn't completely bulletproof."
"Where are the files, Carter?" I asked, keeping my distance.
"They're safe. In a cloud server that will automatically publish to every major news outlet and federal agency in twelve hours if I don't enter a cancellation code," he said, taking a sip of his drink. "I don't want the money anymore, Nadia. I want my life back. I want my job back. I want you to tell your father to return the voting shares to my dad."
"You're blackmailing me to force a reconciliation?" I asked, incredulous. "You think that's how you rebuild a marriage?"
"We were happy!" he shouted, slamming his glass onto a counter. "Before your father walked into that party, we had a good life! My mother was just being herself. You overreacted! You blew up our entire world over a stupid joke, and now my family is ruined. My father is facing depression, my mother can't show her face in public, and I'm a joke in the industry!"
"Your mother tried to destroy my dignity, Carter. And you let her," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "You chose your family's cruelty over your wife's respect. You made your bed."
"Then I'm taking you down with me!" he snarled, stepping closer to me, his face twisted in malice. "You think you're so smart? If those files leak, your father's stock drops forty percent by tomorrow morning. The Vance name will be dragged through the mud. You’ll be just as toxic as we are. Sign the retraction agreement for the shares, give me my job back, and we can pretend this never happened."
I looked at him for a long, painful moment. This was the man I had loved. The man I had promised to spend my life with. And he was entirely hollow.
"I gave you four seconds that night, Carter," I said softly.
"What?"
"At the party. I counted four seconds for you to say something. To protect me. To be a man. You said nothing." I reached into my coat pocket and pulled out my phone. The screen was illuminated. An active digital audio stream was broadcasting directly to our legal team and two cyber-crimes investigators who were currently tracing his IP address. "You should have learned from your mother, Carter. Never make a threat in a room where someone else controls the technology."
The front door burst open, and three corporate security officers, accompanied by a police detective, walked into the penthouse.
Carter froze, his eyes darting from me to the officers.
"Carter Hargrove," the detective said, producing a warrant. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, extortion, and illegal acquisition of proprietary financial data."

As they handcuffed him, Carter looked at me, his eyes wide with a mixture of terror and disbelief. "Nadia! Please! Don't do this! I'm your husband!"
"You were my husband," I said, turning my back on him as they led him out. "Now, you're just a liability."
