CHAPTER 1 — "THE QUESTION BEFORE DAWN"

At exactly 3:47 a.m., the machines surrounding eight-year-old Isabela Azevedo continued their relentless rhythm.

Beep.

Beep.

Beep.

Every sound felt like a countdown.

Not to recovery.

To goodbye.

Outside Room 407, the corridors of the University Hospital were silent except for distant footsteps and the squeak of a nurse's cart rolling across polished floors.

Inside, Maurício Azevedo sat beside the hospital bed, unable to remember the last time he had slept.

Forty-two years old.

Founder of Brazil's fastest-growing construction empire.

Owner of private helicopters, luxury penthouses, and companies worth hundreds of millions.

Yet none of it mattered.

Because the richest man in the room couldn't buy one more healthy day for the little girl holding his finger.

Isabela looked impossibly small beneath the white blanket.

Her once-curly brown hair was gone.

Her tiny wrists were covered with bruises from months of chemotherapy.

The stuffed rabbit she had carried everywhere since kindergarten rested beside her pillow, wearing a tiny pink ribbon she had tied herself before losing the strength to sit up.

Maurício carefully adjusted the blanket.

His hands trembled.

He wasn't afraid of bankruptcy.

He wasn't afraid of death.

He was terrified of becoming a father with no daughter.

Three months earlier...

Everything had seemed perfect.

The Azevedo family had celebrated Isabela's eighth birthday in the gardens of their enormous estate.

There had been ponies.

Fireworks.

Professional magicians.

A chocolate fountain taller than the children.

More than three hundred guests attended.

Maurício had proudly announced that no expense was too great when it came to his princess.

That afternoon, Isabela had whispered something strange while blowing out the candles.

"I didn't wish for toys."

Maurício laughed.

"What did you wish for?"

She smiled mysteriously.

"I can't tell you, Daddy. Or it won't come true."

Nobody thought twice about it.

Until six weeks later.

She fainted during a school recital.

Bruises began appearing without explanation.

Then came the endless blood tests.

The bone marrow biopsy.

The devastating phone call.

Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

Aggressive.

Rare.

Advanced.

By the time specialists identified it...

It had already spread.

Maurício refused to accept reality.

Money solved everything.

Or at least...

It always had.

He chartered private jets to Germany.

He contacted researchers in Boston.

He offered one famous oncologist two million dollars simply to review Isabela's medical file personally.

Experimental treatments.

Clinical trials.

Genetic therapy.

Stem-cell specialists.

Nothing worked.

Every report ended with the same horrifying sentence.

Disease progressing.

Hope shrinking.

Time running out.

The pressure destroyed the family.

His wife, Helena, stopped sleeping.

She blamed herself for ignoring Isabela's first symptoms.

Maurício blamed himself for spending too much time building an empire instead of making memories.

Every conversation became another argument.

"You should've agreed to the clinical trial!"

"It would've killed her faster!"

"You always think money fixes everything!"

"And you think crying changes anything!"

Then both would fall silent.

Because neither truly believed their own words.

Grief was simply looking for someone to punish.

Back in Room 407...

Isabela slowly opened her eyes.

She looked weaker than she had only hours earlier.

Yet somehow...

She smiled.

"Daddy..."

Maurício leaned closer immediately.

"I'm here."

She touched his face with trembling fingers.

"Why are you crying again?"

He tried to laugh.

"I'm not crying."

"You always lie when you're scared."

Those words pierced him deeper than any knife.

Children always knew.

Even when adults pretended.

She watched him quietly.

Then asked,

"Will Mommy still sing in the kitchen after I'm gone?"

Maurício's heart stopped.

"Don't say that."

"Will you still water my flowers?"

His throat closed.

"You're coming home."

She gently shook her head.

"I had another dream."

He forced himself to stay calm.

"What dream?"

Her pale blue eyes seemed strangely bright.

"There was a man."

"What man?"

"He wore simple white clothes."

Maurício frowned.

"Was it a doctor?"

"No."

"A nurse?"

She smiled.

"No."

"What did he look like?"

She stared toward the ceiling.

"I couldn't see his face."

A cold sensation crawled across Maurício's back.

"What did he say?"

Isabela answered without hesitation.

"He said..."

She paused.

"...Daddy doesn't know Me anymore."

Maurício felt goosebumps rise along both arms.

"And then?"

"He said he'll visit you before the sun comes up."

Maurício swallowed hard.

"The morphine is making you dream."

She looked disappointed.

"It wasn't a dream."

He kissed her forehead.

"Try to sleep."

But before closing her eyes again...

She whispered one final sentence.

"When He asks you something..."

"...please don't say no."

At 4:18 a.m., Helena returned carrying two untouched cups of coffee.

She immediately noticed Maurício's expression.

"What happened?"

He hesitated.

"She talked about a man."

Helena sighed.

"The medication."

"No."

"It has to be."

"She said someone will visit me before sunrise."

Helena gently squeezed his shoulder.

"We're exhausted."

"We're imagining things."

Neither of them noticed...

From the hallway...

An elderly janitor pushing a mop bucket had stopped walking.

For just a brief second...

He looked toward Room 407.

Smiled softly.

Then disappeared around the corner.

At 4:41 a.m., Dr. Rodrigo entered with fresh laboratory results.

His face revealed everything before he spoke.

The leukemia markers had doubled.

Blood pressure was falling.

Several organs were beginning to fail.

He quietly recommended calling close relatives.

"It may be time..."

"...to prepare."

Helena collapsed into tears.

Maurício simply stared at the report.

No anger.

No shouting.

No denial.

Only silence.

The silence of a father watching the impossible become inevitable.

Unable to breathe inside the room any longer, Maurício walked through the deserted corridors.

Past empty waiting rooms.

Past sleeping nurses.

Past dark windows reflecting a broken man.

His feet carried him somewhere he had never entered before.

The hospital chapel.

The small room was almost completely dark.

Only a single candle burned beneath a wooden cross.

Maurício sat in the last pew.

For several minutes...

He said nothing.

Then finally whispered into the darkness.

"If You're real..."

"...why her?"

No answer.

Only silence.

He lowered his head.

"I've built hospitals."

"I've donated millions."

"I've helped thousands of families."

"So why my daughter?"

Still nothing.

Tears hit the wooden floor.

Then...

Without warning...

The air inside the chapel changed.

The room suddenly felt warmer.

The candle flame stood perfectly still.

No wind.

No sound.

No footsteps.

Someone was standing behind him.

Maurício slowly turned.

An elderly man dressed in simple white clothing stood near the entrance.

His face was impossible to describe.

Ordinary.

Yet unforgettable.

Kind.

Yet strangely powerful.

Maurício was certain he hadn't heard the door open.

The man smiled gently.

"You've finally come."

Maurício frowned.

"Do I know you?"

Instead of answering...

The stranger asked a single question.

"If I heal your daughter..."

"...will you finally believe in God?"

Maurício laughed bitterly through his tears.

"You don't understand."

"The greatest doctors in the world already failed."

The old man nodded.

"I know."

"Then stop giving me false hope."

The stranger took one slow step closer.

"I didn't ask whether doctors could heal her."

"I asked whether you could believe."

Maurício stood abruptly.

"Who are you?"

The man smiled once more.

"Go back to Room 407."

"Your daughter is waiting."

Maurício blinked.

Only for a second.

When he looked again...

The chapel was empty.

The man had vanished.

No footsteps.

No opening door.

Nothing.

His heart pounded violently as he ran toward the hallway.

Meanwhile...

Inside Room 407...

Every heart monitor in the intensive care unit suddenly began sounding at the exact same moment.

Nurses rushed toward the room.

Doctors shouted emergency orders.

Helena screamed her daughter's name.

And little Isabela...

Who had been unconscious only seconds earlier...

Slowly opened her eyes...

Looked directly toward the empty doorway...

Smiled...

And whispered words that made every doctor in the room freeze.
