Chapter 9 - THE SHADOWS RETREATThree days later, the Croft estate returned to its normal, stately rhythm, though the atmosphere felt lighter, washed clean by the fierce storm that had passed through.

In the sunlit courtyard where the false accusation had first been leveled, the gravel had dried under a bright afternoon sun. Naomi Hart stood by the main gates, packing her diagnostic tools and calibration gear into her leather kit. Her job here was officially finished, but the bond she had forged with the family would last a lifetime.

Julian walked across the yard to meet her, holding two cups of steaming black coffee. He handed one to Naomi, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, profound gratitude that words alone could never fully capture.

"The federal prosecutors are tearing through Edmund’s shell companies as we speak," Julian said quietly, blowing the steam from his cup. "Aegis Logistics is being liquidated. The board of trustees voted unanimously yesterday to restructure our governance, cementing my guardianship permanently. No one will ever threaten Finn’s home again."

"Power attracts parasites, Julian," Naomi replied, taking a sip of the bitter, rich coffee. "You just have to know which watchdogs to trust."

Across the lawn, ten-year-old Finn was running across the lush green grass, laughing out loud—a bright, ringing sound that hadn't been heard in these gardens for years. Bounding right beside him, his black coat shining like polished obsidian in the midday sun, was Briar, carrying a red nylon training toy proudly in his jaws.

Julian watched his son laugh, a heavy weight finally lifting permanently from his shoulders. "You saved us all, Naomi. Name your price. Anything you want, it’s yours."

Naomi smiled, zipping up her canvas equipment bag and slinging it over her shoulder. "Just make sure Briar gets an extra steak for dinner. He earned every bite."
