Chapter 3 - The Matriarch's Poison

The atmosphere inside Le Chocolat Doré was thick with the scent of melted Belgian chocolate, roasted hazelnuts, and extreme wealth. Soft French jazz played from hidden speakers, and the patrons—mostly wealthy women in fur coats—talked in quiet, conspiratorial murmurs.
Sophie was currently laughing, using a silver spoon to scoop a giant marshmallow coated in dark chocolate into her mouth. Victoria sat opposite her, her cold coffee forgotten, her fingers holding a delicate porcelain cup of chamomile tea. For the first time in fifteen years, she wasn't looking at her phone. She was watching Sophie's eyes light up, her heart feeling a strange, fluttery warmth that she had never experienced before.
Then, the shadow fell over their table.
Victoria looked up, her smile instantly freezing.
Eleanor Vance stood there like a statue carved from Siberian ice. She was sixty, but her face was pulled taut by the finest plastic surgeons in Europe, her silver hair styled into an immaculate, gravity-defying chignon. She wore an emerald-green wool coat with a sable collar, and her fingers were heavy with diamonds that could have bought three of the houses Julian currently lived in.
"I had to see it with my own eyes," Eleanor said, her voice a low, elegant purr that carried a lethal edge. "My son, reduced to living in a cramped apartment in the suburbs, and now... his daughter is being paraded around by the Sterling heiress like a charity project."
Sophie stopped eating, her spoon hovering in the air. She shrank back into the velvet booth, her blue eyes wide with a sudden, instinctual fear. "Grandma?" she whispered.
"Don't speak to her, child," Eleanor said, not even deigning to look down at the little girl. Her eyes remained locked on Victoria, filled with a deep, historical hatred. "What is your game, Victoria? Is your father’s company so desperate for our logistics data that you're using my disowned son and his half-breed child to get to our servers?"
Victoria’s blood boiled. The polished, corporate CEO vanished, replaced by a primal, protective instinct she didn't even know she possessed. She stood up slowly, her chair scraping against the marble floor. Though Eleanor was wearing heels, Victoria towered over her, her hazel eyes flashing with a dangerous, golden fire.
"Step back from this table, Eleanor," Victoria said, her voice incredibly quiet, yet so cold it seemed to drop the temperature in the room by ten degrees. "And if you refer to Sophie as a 'half-breed' or a 'project' in my presence again, I will personally ensure that Vance Global's pending SEC filing is tied up in federal court for the next seven years. You know I have the legal resources to do it. Don't test me."
Eleanor sneered, though a flicker of hesitation crossed her eyes. "You think you're powerful, Victoria? You're just a puppet. Your father controls your every move. The moment he finds out you're spending your birthday with the trash of the Vance family, he will discard you just like we discarded Julian."
"I am not my father," Victoria whispered, leaning in close so only Eleanor could hear. "And unlike you, I still have a soul. Now, get out of our sight before I have the manager escort you out for harassing a child."
"There's no need for that," a voice growled from behind Eleanor.
Julian had returned. He stood at the edge of the dining room, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles were white. He looked at his mother, his face a mask of absolute disgust. "I told you five years ago, Eleanor. We are dead to each other. Get away from my daughter."
Eleanor turned to her son, her expression hardening into a look of supreme disappointment. "Look at you, Julian. Wearing a cheap coat, begging for scraps, associating with our worst enemies. Your father is dying. He has months left. He wanted to offer you a path back to the family, to the inheritance. But seeing you here, with her... you've made your choice. You will inherit nothing. Not a single cent."
"Keep your money, Eleanor," Julian said, his voice shaking with a lifetime of suppressed pain. "It never bought you any happiness anyway. Now, leave."
With a dramatic sweep of her green coat, Eleanor turned and walked out of the café, her security detail falling in line behind her like silent black crows.
The silence at the table was heavy. Julian walked over and sat down next to Sophie, pulling her into his arms. Sophie buried her face in his chest, her small shoulders shaking with quiet sobs. "I'm sorry, Daddy. I'm sorry the mean lady came."
Victoria sat back down, her heart aching for them. She looked at Julian, seeing the raw, bleeding wounds of a man who had sacrificed everything for love, only to be hunted by the monsters of his past.
"Julian," Victoria said softly, reaching across the table to touch his arm. "We don't have to do this. If my presence is making things harder for you—"
"No," Julian said, looking up, his blue eyes fierce and determined. "They've taken my past, Victoria. They've taken my inheritance, my career, and my family name. But they are not taking Sophie's day. We promised her a day with a mama. And we are going to finish it."
