Chapter 5 - The Bleeding Ice

The wind off Lake Michigan screamed like a wounded animal, whipping the snow into blinding sheets that stung the skin. The Chicago River was a dark, churning ribbon of black ice below the concrete pad of the heliport.
Michael stood in the center of the pad, his long gray coat flapping violently in the wind. Fifty yards away, the blades of his private helicopter were spinning, casting long, sweeping shadows across the snow.
Richard stood near the edge of the concrete barrier, his designer coat covered in white flakes. His arm was wrapped tightly around Joy, who was crying silently, her tiny hands clutching her purple scarf. Two of Richard’s remaining mercenaries stood behind him, their automatic weapons trained directly on Michael.
"Where is Clara?" Richard shouted over the roar of the helicopter blades.
"She's safe," Michael replied, his voice projecting through the storm with a strength that surprised his nephew. "She’s at a secure location. I brought the drive, Richard. Just like I promised."
He held up the small silver device. The tiny blue LED light on the side flickered in the dark.
"Show me the decryption key!" Richard demanded, tightening his grip on Joy. The little girl gasped, her eyes searching the darkness for her mother.
"Let the girl go first," Michael said, taking a slow step forward. "She’s six years old, Richard. She’s an innocent child. Let her walk to the limousine, and I’ll hand you the drive and the key."
"You don't dictate the terms anymore, Uncle!" Richard shrieked, his face twisted with a manic, desperate energy. "I just got a call from Vail. The local police are active in the area. If you don't give me the drive in thirty seconds, I’ll tell my men to execute David's family and I'll throw this brat into the frozen river!"
"You won't do that," Michael said, his voice dropping into a terrifyingly calm register.
"Why? Because you think you can save her?" Richard sneered.
"No," Michael said, taking another step forward. "Because of what you did to Sarah."
Richard froze. His eyes widened slightly, the smugness on his face faltering. "What are you talking about?"
"I opened her medical files last week, Richard," Michael said, his voice shaking with a deep, righteous fury that had been building for three years. "The 'sudden illness' that took her... the specialists you recommended, the private clinic you insisted she stay in. It was all a setup. You were slowly poisoning her with low-dose digitalis to prevent us from having children—to ensure that I would have no heir, and that the company would pass to you. You killed my wife, Richard."
The silence that followed was louder than the storm.
Richard’s face went entirely cold. The mask of the ambitious corporate nephew was gone, replaced by the empty, hollow stare of a sociopath.
"She was in the way, Michael," Richard said flatly, his voice carrying clearly over the wind. "You were going to retire and leave the company to a child. I spent my entire life working in your shadow, building your empire, while you played the happy family man. I deserved Patterson Industries. I earned it."
"You didn't earn anything," a voice called out from the darkness behind Michael.
Clara stepped out of the shadow of the airport terminal. She was holding a flare gun, her eyes burning with an intense, maternal rage.
"I loaded the decoy file, Richard," Clara shouted. "The police already have your location. Your men in Colorado have already been arrested by the FBI. It’s over."
Richard’s face turned into an ugly, animalistic snarl. "You lying bitch!"
He raised his gun, aiming it directly at Clara.
At that exact second, Joy twisted in his grip, biting down on his gloved hand with all her might. Richard screamed, dropping his arm, and Michael lunged forward.
BANG!
A shot echoed through the night.
