Chapter 1 - The Verdict of Blood

The silence that followed my words didn't just fill the courtroom; it suffocated it.

Vanessa’s smirk faltered, her manicured hand frozen mid-air. Across the aisle, Adrian’s gold watch caught the harsh fluorescent light as he slowly lowered his crossed leg. The smug, untouchable aura he wore like armor suddenly developed a hairline fracture.

From high above the mahogany bench, a heavy, wooden gavel struck the sound block. CRACK.

The sound was like a gunshot. Vanessa jumped, stumbling backward on her designer heels.

"Sit down, Ms. Vance," Judge Thomas Reed said. His voice wasn’t loud, but it possessed the terrifying, low rumble of a dormant volcano waking up.

"Your Honor," Adrian’s high-priced attorney, Richard Sterling, stammered, quickly stepping in front of Vanessa. "My client’s companion was merely caught up in the emotional gravity of the—"

"I said," Judge Reed interrupted, his gray eyes locking onto Sterling with a gaze that could melt steel, "sit down. Before I have the bailiff drag her out of my courtroom in handcuffs for contempt."

Vanessa shrank back, her face flushing a deep, ugly crimson as she scrambled into the bench behind Adrian. She grabbed Adrian’s shoulder, looking for reassurance, but Adrian didn't look at her. His eyes were fixed entirely on the judge. Adrian was a billionaire; he was used to buying politicians, bribing officials, and bending the law until it splintered. But he knew the reputation of Thomas Reed. The man was unbribable, ruthless, and legendary for destroying corrupt men.

Judge Reed slowly stood up. He didn't look at the lawyers. He didn't look at the packed gallery of reporters who were suddenly whispering like a swarm of hornets.

He looked at me.

For twenty-two years, I had remembered him as a giant—the father who held my hand at the park before the screaming matches with my mother tore our world apart. Seeing him now, the gray at his temples and the deep lines around his eyes told the story of two decades of separation. But as our eyes met, I saw the exact moment recognition hit him. He looked at my brow, my jawline, and then down to my hand resting protectively over my pregnant stomach.

The judge’s face went completely, ghostly pale. The papers in his hand trembled slightly before he slammed them onto the desk.

"This hearing is recessed for one hour," Judge Reed announced, his voice vibrating with an emotion he was desperately trying to suppress. "Counsel, in my chambers. Immediately."

"Your Honor?" Adrian finally spoke, his smooth, arrogant voice cutting through the tension. He stood up, buttoning his seven-thousand-dollar suit jacket. "If there is a conflict of interest, perhaps we should request a different judge. I hardly think a minor outburst from a witness warrants a private conference."

Judge Reed stopped at the door of his chambers. He turned around slowly. The look he gave Adrian made the billionaire visibly stiffen.

"Mr. Vale," the judge said softly, dangerously. "You have spent the last three months using your wealth to systematically destroy a citizen of this state. You froze her assets. You slandered her sanity. You brought your mistress into my courtroom to humiliate her."

The judge took a step forward, leaning over the bench.

"The woman you are trying to destroy... is my daughter."

A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. The reporters in the back row practically threw themselves over the wooden barriers, their pens flying, phones flashing secretly despite the rules.

Adrian’s jaw dropped. The indestructible, arrogant millionaire looked as if he had just been hit by a freight train. He looked at me, then at the judge, his mind frantically putting together the pieces he had been too lazy and superior to investigate before. He had married Elena Marlow—a nobody, a quiet girl from a charity gallery. He never bothered to check her birth certificate. He never knew her mother’s maiden name was Marlow.

"Elena..." Adrian whispered, his voice cracking.

I didn't look at him. I kept my hand on my belly, turned my back on the man I used to love, and followed the bailiff toward the private chambers.

But as I passed Adrian, I caught a glimpse of Vanessa’s face. The mistress wasn't just shocked; she looked terrified. And as I looked closer, I noticed she was clutching her designer handbag tightly against her stomach, a strange, desperate panic in her eyes.

I didn't know it yet, but the war hadn't even begun. Adrian thought he was fighting a helpless pregnant woman. He didn't realize he had just walked into a trap that would tear his entire empire to the ground.
