Chapter 7 - THE GHOST IN THE MACHINEThe hard drive glowed faintly in the dim light of the central vault.

Viktor stepped inside, quickly connecting the portable decryption terminal to the master server rack. Lines of data cascaded down his screen at blinding speed—bank transfers in the millions, offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands, names of corrupt city officials, police commissioners, and federal judges.

— It’s all here, Boss, Viktor said, his voice laced with grim satisfaction. — Every bribe, every shell company, every illegal land seizure in the industrial district. This isn't just an indictment. It’s a guillotine for the entire upper crust of this city.

Alfred walked into the vault, kneeling down beside Mila. The little girl was staring at the glowing server lights, her face reflecting the blue glow.

— Your dad was a very smart man, Mila, Alfred said softly. — He made sure the truth survived.

Mila looked up at him, her dark eyes solemn. — Will the bad men go to prison now?

— They’re going to lose everything, Alfred promised, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a vow. — Just like they made other people lose everything.

Suddenly, the terminal screen on Viktor’s desk flashed from green to a pulsing, violent RED.

Warning: External Uplink Detected. System Purge Initiated.

Viktor cursed loudly, his fingers flying across the keyboard. — Damn it! Someone at the syndicate headquarters just remotely triggered a thermal wipe. They’re burning the data banks from the outside! If we don't sever the connection in thirty seconds, the hard drive will self-destruct and melt into slag!

— Cut the hardwired connection! Alfred ordered.

— I can't! It’s an encrypted loop! The physical drive is locked into the master port until the download completes—we’ve only got forty percent!

Alfred didn't hesitate. He stepped up to the server rack, pulled his heavy combat knife from his belt, and jammed the steel blade directly into the secondary power junction, wrenching it sideways with brutal force.

SPARKS!

A cascade of electric blue fire shot across the control panel.

The red screen froze. The self-destruct sequence halted instantly.

Viktor stared at the screen, letting out a long, shaky breath. — Download complete. Eighty-four percent recovered. That’s more than enough to destroy every single one of them.

— Good, Alfred said, pocketing the gold-plated hard drive. — Let’s get out of here. The air down here is starting to smell like corporate desperation.

As they turned toward the elevator, a low, metallic rumble echoed through the subterranean tunnel.

Bruno suddenly stopped, his fur standing straight up along his spine, letting out a deep, ferocious growl that vibrated off the concrete walls.

From the elevator shaft above, the emergency brake cables snapped with a sharp, echoing twang.
