Chapter 8 - TRAPPED IN THE DEPTHSThe elevator car didn't just stop descending—it fell three feet before the emergency latches caught with a bone-jarring slam.

Inside the vault chamber, dust rained down from the concrete ceiling.

— They’ve remotely disabled the lift, Viktor muttered, pulling out his tablet and tapping furiously. — The access codes have been wiped. We’re locked down three hundred feet underground, and the backup generator has been sabotaged.

Alfred’s face remained impassive, but his eyes narrowed. He looked around the vault. Three hundred feet of solid granite above them. No cell service. No exterior communication.

Arthur Vane’s final, bitter trap had been sprung from his prison cell.

— They think they can bury us, Alfred said calmly. — They forget who taught me how to dig.

— Boss, look at this, Viktor said, pointing to a secondary diagnostic window on his terminal. — The vault’s climate control system. It’s venting nitrogen gas into the chamber. They’re trying to suffocate us.

The hiss of invisible gas began to echo softly from the overhead vents.

Mila coughed, pulling her mustard sweater tighter around her neck. Bruno whined, scratching frantically at the floor near the door.

Alfred didn't panic. He moved with cold, mechanical efficiency. He grabbed a heavy titanium wrench from the maintenance kit on the wall, walked over to the reinforced air-vent intake grille, and slammed the wrench against the bolts until they sheared off.

Reaching inside the dark duct, his tattooed arm disappearing up to the elbow, he fumbled around the internal machinery until his fingers found the emergency manual override valve.

CLANK.

He threw his entire body weight into turning it. With a loud groan of protesting metal, the nitrogen flow slammed shut, replaced by a rush of cool, filtered outside air.

Mila took a deep breath, her chest rising and falling as she looked up at Alfred with wide, trusting eyes.

— You’re not scared, are you? she whispered.

Alfred looked down at her, the harsh blue light of the vault casting sharp shadows across his face. For a fleeting second, a memory flickered in his mind—the memory of a terrified little boy in an alley twenty years ago, swearing he would never be helpless again.

— No, Mila, Alfred said, his voice steady and warm. — Because nobody touches anyone in my family.

Viktor, meanwhile, had been working on the manual maintenance hatch at the back of the vault. — Boss! Found it. There’s an old utility maintenance shaft used during the construction of the subway line fifty years ago. It leads up to the abandoned rail yards three blocks away.

— Let’s move, Alfred said, scooping Mila up into his arms once again. — Bruno, heel.

They plunged into the dark, narrow tunnel just as the main vault doors hissed shut behind them, sealing the Syndicate’s dark secrets in the dark earth where they belonged.
