Chapter 1 - The Blood Beneath the Blue Blanket

The blue blanket slid off Megan’s lower body, and the sound of my mother’s breathing was the only thing filling the silent room.

My breath caught in my throat. My knees buckled slightly, hitting the side of the wooden bedframe. I couldn't look away, even though every fiber of my being screamed at me to close my eyes, to pretend I was still standing in the hallway, to turn back the clock thirty seconds.

Megan’s legs—from her mid-thighs all the way down to her swollen ankles—were a horrific map of violence. Deep, blackened bruises overlapped with raw, purple welts. Long, jagged scratches, some scabbed over and others still weeping a thin ribbon of yellowish fluid, crisscrossed her skin. Her shins were swollen to twice their normal size, wrapped in a crude, makeshift bandage made from an old torn t-shirt that had soaked through with dried blood.

She wasn’t hiding a secret lover. She wasn’t hiding a crime.

She was hiding the fact that she was being systematically, brutally tortured inside her own home.

"Oh... my god," I choked out, the words tasting like copper and ash. "Meg... what... what happened to you? Who did this?!"

Megan didn’t scream. She didn’t cry out in relief. She just stared at me with hollow, defeated eyes, her lower lip trembling violently. She pulled the edges of the ruined blanket back over her mutilated legs, as if trying to hide the nightmare from the harsh light of the bedroom lamp.

"I told you," she whispered, her voice cracking like dry winter twigs. "If you saw... everything would fall apart."

I spun around, my vision blurring with a white-hot rage that I had never felt in my entire life. My hands curled into fists so tight my fingernails pierced my palms. I looked at my mother—the woman who had raised me, the woman who had spent the last two months whispering poison into my ear, claiming my wife was a liar, a manipulator, a cheat.

My mother stood by the door, but the cruel satisfaction that had distorted her features just moments ago was gone. In its place was a mask of cold, calculated indifference. She didn’t look shocked. She didn’t look horrified.

She looked like a general who had just watched her trap spring shut.

"Well," my mother said, her voice unnervingly calm, cutting through the heavy air like a razor blade. "Now you know. The little actress can't hide her filth forever, can she?"

The world stopped spinning. The room tilted sideways.

Now you know.

Those words didn't sound like the reaction of a mother discovering her pregnant daughter-in-law had been brutalized. They sounded like a confirmation. They sounded like someone who had known about the injuries before the blanket had even been pulled back.

"What did you say?" I whispered, taking a slow, terrifying step toward my mother.

My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped animal. The pieces of the puzzle—pieces I had been too blind, too trusting, too arrogant to put together—began violently snapping into place. The missing items. The mysterious knocks at the door when I was at the hardware store. The way my mother insisted on coming over every single Tuesday and Thursday afternoon when I was downtown managing the register. The way Megan flinched every time she heard a key turn in the front door lock—not because she was guilty, but because she was terrified of the person holding it.

"You heard me, Jake," my mother said, stepping back into the hallway, her eyes narrowing into cold, calculating slits. "A woman who can’t even keep her husband’s house clean deserves whatever lesson she gets. I was just helping you discipline a wife who forgot her place."
