CHAPTER 4: THE COLD TRUTH

The temperature in the chamber began to drop rapidly.
Ethan’s breath blossomed into thick, white plumes in the dark. He pulled Clara close, wrapping his heavy wool sweater around her. She was shivering violently now, her teeth chattering.
"Ethan?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the rising hum of the ventilation fans. "Is my daddy here?"
Ethan pulled his phone from his pocket. The screen lit up—no service, but the flashlight app still worked. He swept the beam of light around the massive chamber.
It was a labyrinth of heavy pipes, valves, and giant electrical turbines. The walls were coated in a thick layer of frost.
And then, the light caught something in the far corner.
Ethan froze.
Leaning against a massive manual valve steering wheel was a figure. It was covered in a thick layer of white frost, perfectly preserved by the sub-zero temperatures.
It was Thomas Vance.
Clara gasped, pulling away from Ethan. "Daddy!"
"Clara, wait!" Ethan cried, grabbing her arm. He didn't want her to see the grim reality of her father's frozen remains.
But Clara wasn't looking at the body. She was looking at the manual valve wheel.
Written in thick, dark grease on the frozen steel wall above the valve were three words:
THE OVERRIDE IS HERE.
Ethan ran over to the frozen figure. Thomas Vance’s hand was still wrapped around a heavy iron wrench. He had died trying to turn the valve. In his lap was a small, plastic-wrapped notebook.
Ethan gently pulled the notebook from the frozen fingers. He opened it, shining his phone light onto the pages. It was a diary, but the final pages were filled with mechanical schematics and a message written in shaky handwriting:
They locked me in. Marcus Vance did this. But I’ve rigged the system. If they ever turn the cooling grid back on to kill the evidence, the pressure in the commercial lines will build. There is a secondary manual release valve behind this panel. If you turn it, it triggers a catastrophic backdraft. It will blow the entire grid, but it will blast open the emergency pressure release doors. If anyone finds this... save my Clara.
Ethan looked at the wall behind Thomas. There was a rusted metal panel, held in place by four heavy bolts.
"He did it," Ethan whispered, tears freezing on his cheeks. "He didn't just try to survive. He left a trap."
"Ethan, I'm so cold," Clara whimpered, collapsing onto the frozen floor. Her eyelids were fluttering. She was slipping into the final, deadly stages of hypothermia.
Ethan knew they had minutes.
He grabbed the heavy iron wrench from Thomas’s frozen hand. "Forgive me, Thomas," he muttered.
He threw himself at the metal panel. With all his remaining strength, he slammed the wrench against the rusted bolts.
CLANG! CLANG!
The first bolt snapped.
The air grew colder. The digital display on a nearby monitoring unit read: -15°F (-26°C).
Ethan’s hands were losing sensation. He could barely grip the wrench. He screamed, channeling all his guilt, his rage, and his desperation into one final blow.
CLANG!
The second and third bolts shattered. The metal panel fell away, revealing a bright red valve wheel with a heavy chain wrapped around it.
Ethan grabbed the wheel. It wouldn't budge. It was frozen solid.
"Come on!" he screamed, his muscles tearing under the strain. He wedged the wrench into the spokes of the wheel, using it as a lever.
Outside, in the monitoring room, Marcus was watching the temperature gauges rise. Suddenly, an alarm began to blare.
"What’s happening?" Marcus demanded, grabbing a technician by the collar.
"Sir! The pressure in the main commercial grid is skyrocketing! Someone is manually overriding the backdraft valves from inside the chamber! If that pressure blows, it will destroy the foundation of the Cole Meridian headquarters!"
"Shut it down!" Marcus roared. "Cut the power!"
"We can't! It's a mechanical override! It's manual!"
Inside the chamber, Ethan gave one final, desperate heave.
SNAP.

The chain shattered. The red wheel spun freely.
A deafening roar filled the underground tunnels.
