Chapter 6 - The Hidden PartitionThe drive back to the house was dead silent, save for the rhythmic swish of the cruiser’s windshield wipers clearing the light mist that had begun to fall over the asphalt.

When we walked back through our front door, the crime scene technicians were still dusting for prints and packing up their evidence kits. Leo was asleep on the living room sofa, wrapped safely in a fresh blanket, his breathing deep and regular under the watchful eye of a female officer assigned to our protection.
Detective Vance and I walked straight past the dining room table—where dinner still sat, cold and untouched—and headed directly into David’s private office.
The heavy oak desk was covered in dusting powder, but the black aluminum laptop David used for his personal affairs remained untouched on the charging dock, having been cleared for forensic extraction.
"Victoria’s words kept ringing in my head," Vance said, pulling up a rolling chair and sliding the laptop toward himself. "A hidden partition. Let’s see what she was hinting at."
Vance was a seasoned investigator, but even his fingers moved with a hesitant caution as he connected a forensic decryption drive to the laptop’s USB port. A black terminal window popped up on the screen, lines of green code scrolling down at blinding speed as the decryption script bypassed David’s local administrative passwords.
Access Granted.
A secondary drive icon appeared on the desktop, labeled simply: ARCHIVE_2026.
Vance clicked it open. Inside were hundreds of subfolders, organized meticulously by date, location, and name. But these weren't real estate portfolios or financial spreadsheets.
They were surveillance logs.
I leaned over Vance’s shoulder, my breath hitching as I recognized the names of our neighbors, our friends, and local business associates. There were hidden camera feeds, audio recordings from bugged conference rooms, and detailed psychological profiles of dozens of people in our community.
"Look at this folder," Vance murmured, clicking on one labeled TARGET_ACQUISITION_04.
Inside were high-resolution photographs of my own father—who had died three years ago in what the authorities had ruled a tragic, accidental house fire.
My knees wobbled. I grabbed the edge of the desk to steady myself.
"My dad," I whispered, the words barely audible. "That fire... the police said it was an electrical fault in the basement."
Vance opened the subfolder. Inside was a digital video file dated three years prior, just two weeks before my father’s death. He clicked play.
The video showed David standing in my late father’s basement, tampering with the electrical breaker box while holding a small, specialized soldering iron. The audio picked up David’s voice talking on his phone to someone who sounded suspiciously like Victoria:
"The old man’s will leaves the estate directly to Clara, which means I have zero direct control over the primary land holdings. Once the house burns, the probate court reroutes the title execution through marital default clauses. It's clean."
The room spun around me. The floor seemed to dissolve beneath my feet.
David hadn't just tried to murder my son and me for a ten-million-dollar insurance payout. He had murdered my father. He had engineered my family’s entire tragedy from the very beginning, slowly, methodically erasing everyone who stood between him and total financial control of our lineage.
"He's a serial predator operating under the guise of a suburban husband," Vance said, his voice hard as iron. He slammed the laptop shut and stood up. "This changes everything. This isn't just a local conspiracy anymore. I’m contacting federal authorities. David is never seeing the light of day again."
But as Vance reached for his radio to call the precinct, my phone—lying on the corner of the desk—began to vibrate violently.

The screen flashed with an incoming call from an unknown, restricted number.
I stared at it, my heart hammering against my ribs, knowing that the nightmare wasn't over. In fact, the worst part was just beginning.
