Chapter 7 - Justice in the SnowBefore Kenneth could recover, the front doors of the lodge burst open with a resounding crash.

"Police! Nobody move!"

Detective Monroe and four tactical officers swarmed into the room, their weapons drawn and laser sights painting a web of red dots across Kenneth’s chest.

Kenneth groaned, clutching his bruised ribs as he struggled to push himself up from the floor. He looked up into the array of drawn firearms, realizing with sickening clarity that the trap had finally snapped shut.

"Kenneth Ross, you're under arrest for securities fraud, conspiracy to commit murder, and attempted assassination," Monroe announced, stepping forward with a pair of steel handcuffs. "You have the right to remain silent..."

As the officers hauled him to his feet, forcing his arms behind his back and clicking the cuffs into place, Kenneth turned his head. His eyes locked onto mine with a look of pure, unadulterated venom.

"She’s unstable!" he shouted to the officers as they dragged him toward the door. "She’s insane! She forged those documents herself! You'll never make it stick!"

"Save it for the judge, counselor," Monroe muttered, shoving him out into the freezing night air.

I stood alone in the center of the ruined study. The fire crackled softly in the stone hearth, consuming the last few ashes of his fabricated life. The wind howled outside, but for the first time in six years, the house felt warm. The cage door was wide open, and the sky outside was clear.
