Chapter 3 - The Ghost in the CradleI rushed toward her, dropping my weapon to grab the heavy iron cuffs bound to her wrists. “Grace! Jesus Christ, Grace, I’m here. I’ve got you.”

“No!” she screamed, a sudden, terrifying burst of energy tearing through her weak frame. She threw her body forward, using her own chest to block me from reaching the acrylic incubator hanging above us. “Don't touch the baby, Matteo! Look at him! Look at his face!”

I froze, my hands trembling as I slowly looked up at the tiny infant resting inside the plastic box.

The child wasn't crying anymore. His skin was pale, almost translucent. But it wasn't his breathing that made my blood run cold.

It was his eyes.

They were wide open, completely unblinking, shining with an unnatural, milky-white film. The child wasn't a newborn. His features were too formed, his skull structured in a way that defied normal human development. And strapped around his miniature chest wasn't just a heart monitor—it was a sophisticated, military-grade biometric receiver hardwired into a small, pulsing metallic disk embedded directly beneath his collarbone.

“That... that isn't a child,” I whispered, stepping back, horror gripping my throat.

“It’s a prototype,” a deep, unfamiliar voice echoed from the shadowed corner of the vault.

A man stepped out from behind a row of humming server racks. He was dressed in a tailored charcoal suit, his hair swept back, a thin, silver scar slicing vertically through his left eyebrow. He held a small silver detonator in his right hand, his thumb resting lightly on a glowing green button.

I recognized him instantly.

Dominic Moretti. The former Underboss of our rival clan—the man I was supposed to have executed four months ago in Vienna. The man whose death had supposedly sealed the peace treaty that allowed me to return home.

“You... I killed you,” I growled, reaching for my Beretta on the floor.

“You shot a body double in a dark alleyway in Austria, Matteo,” Dominic said with a smooth, terrible calm. “Your mother paid me ten million euros to let you believe I was dead. She needed you focused on the war while we completed the real work here.”

He gestured toward Grace, who was weeping quietly, her forehead resting against the cold iron of her chains.

“Your precious wife wasn't an innocent civilian you pulled out of an orphanage in Florence,” Dominic continued, stepping closer to the incubator. “Her real name is Dr. Elena Vance. Julian’s daughter. She was our lead geneticist. The pregnancy? Synthetic. A three-phase biological incubation designed to carry the primary encryption key for the entire European crime syndicate’s dark asset accounts.”

My world tilted on its axis. The air in my lungs turned to ice.

I looked at Grace—at Elena. The woman I had held in my arms for three years. The woman who had cried when I bought her a simple golden pendant for her birthday. The woman who had promised to build a normal life with me away from the blood and the iron.

“Tell him, Elena,” Dominic sneered. “Tell your husband what happens when the 'baby' reaches full incubation.”

Grace didn't look at me. She kept her face hidden beneath her matted hair, her shoulders shaking violently.

“It’s not a child, Matteo...” she choked out, her voice broken. “It’s a biological storage drive. The 'baby'... it’s an artificial organism created using synthetic tissue and organic data nodes. Everything... all the names of the corrupt politicians, the bank codes, the assassination orders... it’s all stored inside its neural tissue. If the heart stops... the tissue degrades, and the data is lost forever.”

“And your mother wanted that data,” Dominic added, smiling coldly. “She wanted total control over the Rossi network before you could take the throne. But Elena... Elena did something foolish. She fell in love with her assignment.”
