Chapter 4 - The Hero’s Public Mask

Hook: "He built his empire on my tears. Tonight, I tear down the scaffolding."
I read the digital headline on the tablet, my fingers tightening until the glass groaned.
"He’s using my name to fund his alliance," I said, throwing the tablet onto the bed.
We were in the back of Luca's armored limousine, navigating through the glittering downtown traffic. Outside, rain streaked the windows, blurring the neon lights of the city.
Tonight was the night.
Adrien was hosting his grand charity gala, surrounded by the city's political elite, the media, and his secret Volkov allies. He believed he was safe behind his wall of public sympathy. He believed I was locked in a basement somewhere, helpless and crying.
"He thinks he has won," Luca said. He was looking incredibly sharp in a bespoke black tuxedo, his hair slicked back, his dark eyes reflecting the passing streetlights. "He’s finalized the deal with Ivan Volkov. The shipment of contraband is scheduled to land at the Cross terminal in two hours, right while Adrien is making his closing speech."
"Then we strike both at once," I said. My heart was pounding, but it wasn't out of fear. It was anticipation.
"Are you ready for this, Elena?" Luca asked, his voice suddenly soft, almost gentle. He reached across the seat and placed his hand over mine. "Once we walk through those doors, there is no going back. The city will know you are alive, but they will also know you are with me. You will never be able to go back to your quiet life."
I looked down at his hand, then up at his face.
For three weeks, this man had shown me more respect, more honesty, and more strength than Adrien had in three years. He hadn't tried to possess me; he had empowered me.
"That quiet girl died on Old Stone Road, Luca," I said, my voice ringing with absolute certainty. "I don't want my old life back. I want justice."
The limousine pulled up to the valet entrance of the Grand Plaza Hotel.
Flashbulbs exploded against the tinted glass. Dozens of reporters were lined up along the red carpet, desperate to catch a glimpse of the elite arriving for the "tragedy of the year."
Luca got out first.
The moment his towering figure stepped onto the red carpet, a collective gasp rippled through the crowd. The security guards froze. The reporters stopped shouting, their cameras pivoting toward him in stunned silence.
Luca turned and extended his hand into the car.
I took it.
I stepped out of the limousine into the flashing lights.
I wasn't wearing white. I was wearing a stunning, backless black silk gown that clung to my body like liquid midnight. Around my neck was a collar of diamonds that caught the light with every movement. My hair was sleek, my red lipstick bold, my gaze steady.

The crowd went completely silent for three seconds.
Then, chaos erupted.
