CHAPTER 8: The Final Betrayal Beneath the Island

Midnight.

A thick blanket of fog covered Blackwater Lake.

Against everyone's advice, Emma piloted a small boat toward the abandoned island alone.

Alexander secretly ordered his security team to follow from a distance.

"If anything happens," he said, "bring her home alive."

But someone else was listening.

Inside the security convoy...

Alexander's own son quietly sent a single text message.

"She's on her way."

Emma stepped onto the deserted island.

An old lighthouse stood at the center, its light dead for decades.

The rusted door slowly creaked open by itself.

A voice echoed through the darkness.

"You came."

Emma walked inside.

"Where is my grandfather?"

The lights suddenly switched on.

An underground elevator descended beneath the lighthouse.

When its doors opened...

Emma gasped.

She found herself inside a hidden command center filled with computer screens, maps, and decades of surveillance records.

Every birthday.

Every school photo.

Every address where she had ever lived.

Someone had been watching her entire life.

Then an elderly man emerged from the shadows.

His face was scarred.

His beard had turned completely white.

But his eyes...

Emma recognized them instantly from every childhood photograph.

She whispered through tears.

"Grandpa..."

The old man smiled.

"My little Emily."

Emma ran into his arms.

For the first time in twenty-five years...

The family she thought she had lost was finally together.

"I searched everywhere for you," she cried.

He gently held her face.

"I know."

"I watched every step."

"I just couldn't come out."

Emma looked at him in disbelief.

"Why?"

Before he could answer...

A slow clap echoed through the bunker.

Everyone turned.

Alexander Ashford walked into the room.

Emma smiled in relief.

"You found me!"

But her grandfather's expression changed instantly.

His face turned pale.

"No..."

Emma frowned.

"What is it?"

The old man took one step backward.

"He wasn't supposed to be here."

Alexander slowly removed his glasses.

Then...

He smiled.

Not the warm smile Emma had trusted.

A cold...

Victorious smile.

"I've waited thirty years for this reunion."

Emma stared at him.

"What are you talking about?"

Her grandfather shouted,

"RUN!"

Too late.

Dozens of armed mercenaries burst through hidden doors, surrounding the room.

Alexander's security team entered behind them...

Only to point their weapons at Emma instead.

The lawyer had been right all along.

Alexander had never been protecting Emma.

He had been controlling her.

Alexander laughed quietly.

"Did you really think your grandfather survived because of luck?"

"I kept him alive."

"Just long enough."

Emma's heart pounded.

"You... protected me."

Alexander nodded.

"Of course."

"You can't inherit twelve billion dollars if you're dead."

"You needed to stay alive..."

"...until every remaining heir revealed themselves."

Emma slowly realized the horrifying truth.

She had never been the target.

She had been the bait.

Alexander looked at the old billionaire.

"Richard..."

"Sign the transfer documents."

"Or I'll kill your granddaughter in front of you."

The old man's hands trembled.

"I'd rather die."

Alexander smiled.

"I expected that."

He snapped his fingers.

Mercenaries dragged Isabella into the room.

She was bruised, terrified, and handcuffed.

Emma couldn't believe it.

"You were working together!"

Isabella burst into tears.

"I thought he wanted the inheritance!"

"He lied to me!"

Alexander laughed.

"I lied to everyone."

Then he revealed the final secret.

"There was never twelve billion dollars."

"There is forty-eight billion."

Every person in the bunker froze.

"The Ashford Trust was only one piece."

"Richard's real fortune has been hidden inside a private international banking network for thirty years."

Alexander slowly pulled a golden key from his pocket.

"But only Richard..."

"...and his biological granddaughter..."

"...can unlock it together."

Emma looked at her grandfather.

He looked back at her with tears in his eyes.

Then he whispered three words that changed everything.

"Don't trust..."

"...your mother."

Before Emma could react...

A gunshot echoed through the bunker.

And someone behind her collapsed to the floor.

Emma slowly turned around...

Her own mother was standing there.

Holding the smoking pistol.

With tears running down her face.

She whispered,

"I'm sorry...

He forced me to choose."

May you like

Then she pointed the gun...

Directly at Emma.
