Chapter 15 - The Return to ChicagoSpring arrived in Chicago with a fierce, warm breeze that swept away the remnants of winter and painted the city skyline in brilliant shades of gold and blue.

We didn't return to the Lake Forest mansion—that property had been demolished, replaced by an empty plot of land deeded to the city for a public park. Instead, Dominic bought a quiet, sprawling brownstone in Lincoln Park, surrounded by old oak trees, high brick walls, and a neighborhood where people walked their dogs without looking over their shoulders.
Tyler was fully recovered, attending a prestigious pre-med program at Northwestern University, completely free of the medical debt that had once nearly crushed our family. My mother lived with us on weekends, happily tending to a sprawling rooftop garden that overlooked Lake Michigan.
And Noah?
Noah was a normal, happy seven-year-old boy. He rode his bicycle down the sidewalk, played soccer in the backyard with the neighborhood kids, and hadn't mentioned shadow-men or broken lights in over a year.
One Saturday afternoon, Dominic and I sat on the back porch sipping iced coffee while Noah chased a golden retriever across the grass.
Dominic slipped a small, velvet jeweler's box across the rustic wooden table.
I looked at the box, then up at Dominic, whose dark eyes held a nervous vulnerability I had never seen in him before.
"I'm not a patient man, Clara," Dominic said softly, clearing his throat. "And I'm certainly not the kind of guy who traditionally gets a happy ending. But from the moment you walked into that mansion with your canvas tote and looked my son in the eye without running away... I knew my life had changed."
He popped the box open, revealing a breathtaking, flawless diamond ring that caught the afternoon sunlight.
"Will you marry me, Clara? And help me be the family we both fought so hard to save?"
I didn't hesitate. I reached across the table, placed my hand in his scarred, warm palm, and smiled.

"About time, Mr. Vale," I whispered. "I thought you'd never ask."
As Dominic slid the ring onto my finger and pulled me into a fierce, joyful embrace, the last shadow of the Chicago mafia vanished into the bright spring sunlight, leaving only a future we had earned together.
