Chapter 6 - THE MIDNIGHT COUNCILThe cavernous underground vault beneath the estate’s wine cellar was normally used for storing contraband, settling internal disputes, or holding meetings that could never risk the light of day. Tonight, it served as a tribunal.

Seventy men stood in a silent, semi-circle around the polished concrete floor. They were the apex predators of the East Coast underworld—capos from Brooklyn, bosses from Queens, and financial fixers from Manhattan. They wore dark suits, their faces carved from stone, watching Dominic Vale as he stood at the head of a massive iron table.

To his right stood Marcus and Daniel, their hands resting near their holsters.

To his left, bound to steel chairs with heavy zip-ties, sat Nathan Cross and Claire Bennett.

Nathan’s face was bruised, his white shirt stained with dried blood and dirt. His usual arrogant composure had cracked, replaced by a desperate, twitchy defiance. Claire, however, sat in absolute silence, her designer trench coat ruined by mud, her eyes staring blankly at the floor as if she had already accepted her execution.

Dominic stepped forward, the heels of his leather shoes clicking sharply against the concrete.

“Gentlemen,” Dominic began, his voice carrying effortlessly across the large, vaulted room. “Thank you for coming on such short notice. I called you here tonight not to discuss business, not to negotiate territory, but to perform a necessary amputation.”

A murmur rippled through the crowd of hardened criminals.

Dominic gestured toward Nathan and Claire.

“For seventeen years, I believed I knew who my brothers were,” Dominic continued, his eyes sweeping over the assembled capos. “I believed loyalty was earned through blood, shared danger, and mutual respect. I was wrong.”

He tossed Nathan’s encrypted laptop onto the center of the iron table with a dull thud.

“Nathan Cross, my closest adviser, my second-in-command, spent the last twenty-four months systematically looting our accounts, forging asset transfers, and preparing a hostile takeover of Vale Logistics in collusion with federal investigators and corporate shell companies.”

Gasps erupted from several of the older capos in the back. Nathan had been a legend in the syndicate; hearing him exposed as a thief sent shockwaves through the room.

“That’s a lie!” Nathan shouted, straining against his restraints, his voice cracking with desperation. “Dom is paranoid! He’s losing his grip on the family! Look at him—he’s holding a kangaroo court because a maid told him a fairy tale! If you let him execute me today, none of you are safe! He’ll turn on every single one of you tomorrow!”

“Shut him up,” Dominic said softly.

Marcus stepped forward with a strip of heavy-duty duct tape and slapped it brutally across Nathan’s mouth, cutting off his frantic screams.

Dominic turned his gaze toward Claire. She didn't look up.

“As for Claire Bennett,” Dominic said, his voice dropping into a register of pure ice, “she was chosen to be my wife. Instead, she chose to become an accessory to corporate treason, kidnapping, and the psychological torture of a four-year-old child living under my roof.”

The room went dead silent. In the underworld, business was business—money could be stolen, territories could be contested, and blood could be spilled. But harming a child on a boss's estate was a violation of the most sacred, unwritten law of the syndicate.

An old caporegime from Brooklyn named Salvatore stepped forward, spitting a stream of tobacco onto the floor.

“You brought them before the council, Dom,” Salvatore growled, his voice thick with gravel. “That means you’re giving us a vote. What’s the sentence?”

Dominic looked around the room, meeting the eyes of every man present.

“The accounts have been frozen and recovered,” Dominic said clearly. “The federal informants they leaked to have been neutralized. The corporate shell companies have been dissolved. There is no longer any threat to the syndicate.”

He paused, letting the silence settle over the room like a heavy shroud.

“The sentence for treason,” Dominic pronounced, “is erasure. Not just from this family, but from history. Their names will never be spoken in this city again. Their assets absorbed into the foundation. And their bodies...”

Dominic turned toward Marcus and Daniel.

“...will feed the valley wolves before dawn.”

A unanimous, heavy nod rippled through the seventy men standing in the vault. No one objected. No one pleaded for mercy. In the world Dominic Vale ruled, betrayal was a disease, and the only cure was total annihilation.
